7 Teaching notes This PowerPoint resource is designed to introduce some irregular verb patterns to key stage 3 students. The accompanying Word document includes verb hand-outs, battleships grids and an interview scaffold. PowerPoint slides Slides 1-6 These slides introduce the irregular verbs with an e > ie pattern (querer, pensar, cerrar, preferir), with examples, pronunciation practice and a matching task. You could then provide the hand-out on p.1 above, showing the full conjugation of verbs in this group. Slides 7-13 These slides introduce the irregular verbs with a u > ue or o > ue pattern (jugar, volver, contar, dormir, recordar), with examples, pronunciation practice and a gap fill task. To complete the gap fill task, students may need to refer to the hand-out on p.2 above, showing the full conjugation of verbs in this group. Slides These slides introduce verbs with irregulars in certain forms only (saber, hacer, salir, decir), with examples in the first person singular. A battleships grid (juego 1) is provided on slide 19 in order to model this activity to the class. You could then provide the battleships grids on p.4 for students to play in pairs. Students must draw a battleship in three squares, without showing their partner. They then take turns to guess the location of their partner s battleships by reading one sentence from the top and one from the side, noting hits and misses on the second grid. Slide 20 A plenary slide to encourage students to talk about themselves using as many of the verbs as they can remember from the lesson, along with the prompts provided. Students could then use the interview grids on pp.5-6. This information gap interview can be differentiated, with the option of completing the missing letters in the verbs as a class first before beginning and/or cutting off the vocabulary at the bottom. Students can show their understanding of their partner s response in picture form or by writing a Spanish sentence in the third person singular Page 7 of 7
