1 Cranes can be found on almost every jobsite. You can see them lifting trusses on residential projects; setting large pieces of equipment on industrial projects; and moving air-handling units on commercial projects. Cranes are essential in construction. However, cranes also present safety hazards for operators, workers, and bystanders. Cranes are hazardous when they aren t inspected, maintained, or operated properly. There is the danger of electrocution if a crane touches an overhead power line. There are crushed-by and struck-by hazards, falling object hazards, and pinch point hazards. When cranes aren t assembled and set up properly, there is the very real danger of a catastrophic collapse. Never operate a crane unless you are trained and qualified to operate it. Follow the manufacturer s recommendations. Be sure that a competent person has inspected the crane and its controls before you start using it. Establish and clearly mark an exclusion zone and barricade the swing radius. Always know the weight of the load. Never exceed the crane s load capacity. Keep the load chart in the operator s cab. Pay attention to the weather since it can affect the safety of crane operations. Before thunderstorms and high winds, stop crane operations, lower the boom, and move away from the crane. Always keep booms, hoist lines, loads, and tag lines a safe distance from overhead power lines. Do you know what the safe distance is? The minimum distance is 10 feet for power Cranes lines up to 50kV. Larger clearances are required for higher voltages. Do you know what the line voltage is? Every crane is required to have an annual inspection. The inspection is typically done by a third party. It includes load testing and a thorough examination of all structural members, braces, sheaves, pulleys, limit switches, wire rope, gauges, controls, and safety devices. The inspection is important because anytime you re around a crane, you need to know that it s safe and will work reliably. OSHA regulations prohibit changes or additions to a crane if they could affect capacity or safety. If a crane needs to be modified, you need written approval from the manufacturer and the original safety factor cannot be reduced. Practically speaking, this means you don t modify cranes very often. Be very alert when you work around cranes. If the crane can travel on the ground, never get in its path while it s moving. Signal the operator and get permission before walking in front of or behind a crane. Never walk under a suspended load. Keep out of the swing radius several construction workers die each year because they get caught in a crane s swing radius. If you have to be in the swing radius, follow lockout/tagout procedures. SAFETY REMINDER OSHA s new crane standard continues to be revised.
