7 The present tense of gustar with infinitives The infinitive form of a verb tells what s happening. But unlike a conjugated verb, it doesn t tell you who performs the action or when the action takes place. In Spanish, infinitives may have one of three endings: ar er ir nadar to swim correr to run escribir to write Like nouns, infinitives are used after gustar to say what people like to do. Me gusta patinar. Me gusta estudiar español. A Diego le gusta jugar al fútbol. A María y a Marta les gusta hablar por teléfono. A nosotros nos gusta escuchar la música rock. 7

11 Pronouns after prepositions Pronouns can have different forms even if they refer to the same person. Yo soy Andrea. Me gusta el helado. After prepositions like a to, con with, de of, from, about, and en in, on, at, the pronouns yo and tú change to mí and ti. All other subject pronouns stay the same. Subject After a preposition With gustar yo a mí me gusta tú a ti te gusta él/ella a él/ella le gusta usted a usted le gusta nosotros as a nosotros as nos gusta vosotros as a vosotros as os gusta ellos/ellas a ellos/ellas les gusta ustedes a ustedes les gusta Con: the pronouns mí and ti make conmigo with me and contigo with you. To emphasize or clarify who likes something, add a + a pronoun to a sentence with gustar. A mí me gusta patinar. I like to skate. You and your classmates are busy with their friends. Use the cues below to say what each one likes to do and with whom. MODELO él / correr / ellos A él le gusta correr con ellos. 1. yo / ver televisión / tú 2. ella / alquilar videos / ustedes 3. tú / ir al cine / yo Use the preposition a + a pronoun to emphasize or clarify who the underlined pronouns refer to in the following sentences. 21 The present tense of regular ar verbs All verbs have a stem which gives the meaning and an ending. The infinitive doesn t tell you who or what the subject is. To indicate the subject, you must conjugate the verb. To conjugate a regular ar verb such as nadar, hablar, or cantar, drop the ar ending and replace it with one of the following endings. yo nado nosotros as nadamos tú nadas vosotros as nadáis usted nada ustedes nadan él/ella nada ellos/ellas nadan Nosotros nadamos los sábados. We swim on Saturdays. Subject pronouns can be left out because the verb ending tells who the subject is. Yo hablo por teléfono. Hablo por teléfono. Use the subject pronoun for emphasis or to make it clear who the subject is. Corren ustedes? Yo nunca corro. No me gusta! Do you jog? I never jog. I don t like to!
