1 A powder-actuated tool is like a firearm in many ways. Just like a gun, a powder-actuated tool uses an explosive to shoot a projectile. In the case of the tool, the projectile is a fastener. The fastener is fired from the tool just like a bullet is fired from a firearm. Powder-actuated tools are used to attach objects to steel and concrete because it is difficult to drive nails into or drill into them. These tools can be dangerous, but just like firearms, you can avoid accidents and injuries if you take the time to learn how to use them properly and safely. You should never operate a powder-actuated tool unless you are authorized to use it and have been trained on the specific tool you will be using. It s important that you read, understand, and follow the manufacturer s instructions before you use the tool. If you haven t been trained to use the tool, don t use it. When you operate powder-actuated tools, wear eye, face, and hearing protection at all times. Get the right PPE before you pick up the tool. Inspect the tool before you use it. Make sure it is clean and that all moving parts operate freely. Check the barrel for obstructions. Powder-actuated tools have to be tested each day before they are used; follow the manufacturer s test procedure. If you find defects, if the tool is damaged in any way, or if the tool malfunctions during the test or while you are using it, remove the tool from service immediately and tag it Do Not Use. After you are done with the tool, clean it and store it in its case in a secure location. Powder-Actuated Tools Safe work practices for using powder-actuated tools: Never point a powder-actuated tool at anyone. Don t leave powder-actuated tools unattended. Only use shields, guards, and attachments provided by the manufacturer. Only use fasteners that were designed and manufactured specifically for the tool you re using. Never use powder-actuated tools where flammable or explosive vapors are present. Don t put cartridges into the tool until you are ready to fire. Never put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot a fastener. Only drive fasteners into materials that will prevent the fastener from passing completely through and creating a flying-missile hazard on the other side. Never shoot into cracked or spalled concrete. If there is a misfire, hold the tool in the firing position for 30 seconds, then try firing again. If it doesn t fire, hold it for another 30 seconds, remove the cartridge and place it in water. SAFETY REMINDER If your co-worker is using a powder-actuated tool nearby, you should use hearing protection. Do Not Use (No usar).
