1 AP Spanish Summer Work, 2018 Sra. White Please do not hesitate to contact me any time this summer if you have problems or questions. The Summer Work is due the first Friday of class. C1 reflection chart Complete the C1 column only of the culture chart in Spanish with your cultural references Your chart will be graded and returned to you to continue completing as we study the themes in AP Spanish. Your chart will be graded according to completion and use of language. Grade: 50 points presentational writing Remember: No typed work is accepted in AP Spanish. The use of online translators, heritage/native speakers, or other translating help is prohibited in the AP Spanish class. Central to the AP Spanish Language and Culture course is the overarching principle as stated in the Curriculum Framework provided by the College Board: When communicating, students in the AP Spanish Language and Culture course demonstrate an understanding of the culture(s), incorporate interdisciplinary topics (connections), make comparisons between the native language and the target language and between cultures (comparisons), and use the target language in real-life settings (communities). To understand the CULTURE of a people/society, we must compare our own culture and that of others by studying and understanding the following: Los productos - things people do and use. The products can be tangible (an article of clothing, an instrument, a house, a monument), or intangible (laws, educational system, other institution). Las prácticas actions of the people. Examples are the ways of celebrating special occasions and events like birthdays and weddings, daily activities such as the way members of a culture greet each other, learn, work and interact. Las perspectivas indicate how people in a culture see the world, what their values are, what they believe in, such as the relationship between man and nature, attitudes towards life and death, religious beliefs, the concept of family, friendship, love, the value of work. We cannot see the perspectives, but we can infer them by observing the products and practices of a culture.

2 AP Spanish C1 and C2 reflection chart nombre: In order to understand the language of another country, one must understand the people of the country. In order to understand the people, one must understand the products, practices and perspectives of their society. All these things form the culture of a country. In order to understand the culture of another country, one must understand his/her own culture. Complete the C1 statement column of the chart in Spanish with a statement about your culture. This is called C1 (culture 1). The more specific you are, the better you will understand C2 as we study Latin America and Spain. You can write examples, your personal experience, something you learned for this assignment, etc, in the C1 column. During the school year you will write C2 statements.
