This welcome is founded on centuries of hospitality. A hallmark of The Episcopal Church is a broad tent of belief and practice, in which all may find a home. Belief We believe that every person is precious, made in God s image. We believe in a God of creation, of redemption, and of constant presence and love. We believe in the risen Lord, Jesus Christ. The Episcopal Church agrees with nearly every Christian tradition on the basics of the faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Apostles Creed and Nicene Creed contain a summary of our 3

In The Book of Common Prayer, which you may find in the pews of any Episcopal Church, there is a short catechism a document essentially outlining frequently asked questions with answers and a more detailed summary of our faith. What makes The Episcopal Church unique in belief is our understanding of authority. We understand authority to come from scripture, tradition, and reason, in that order. Our beliefs must align with scripture, first and foremost. Second, we consider what the church has said over the centuries our tradition. Finally, we apply our God-given human reason. This combination guards against both a knee-jerk faith based on our own preferences, and a rigid faith that does not adapt to our changing world. Different from other denominations, each congregation in The Episcopal Church selects and votes for lay members from the parish community to form a vestry. The vestry becomes the legal representative and governing body of the congregation and manages all the administrative responsibilities. These responsibilities include securing each family s pledges for the support of the 5
