1 SKILL 78 Are You Read? Function Tables Teaching Skill 78 Objective Generate ordered pairs for given values of a function. Eplain to students that function tables are used to generate ordered pairs in the form (, ). These ordered pairs can be used to graph a function. Review with students how to evaluate a function for a given value of. Remind students that the should be particularl careful when substituting negative values into a function. Direct students attention to the eample. Point out that the -values are called inputs. Ask: In this eample, what are the inputs? (,,, and ) Eplain that the inputs are substituted into the function, and the -values that result are called the outputs. The ordered pairs are the points (, ). Work through the eample, making sure students understand how the function is being applied to the input values to generate the outputs. Then have students complete the practice eercises. PRACTICE ON YOUR OWN In eercises 8, students generate ordered pairs b completing function tables for given inputs. CHECK Determine that students know how to complete function tables. Students who successfull complete the Practice on Your Own and Check are read to move on to the net skill. COMMON ERRORS Students ma not perform the operations of a function s rule correctl and ma arrive at an incorrect output for a given input. Students who made more than errors in the Practice on Your Own, or who were not successful in the Check section, ma benefit from the Alternative Teaching Strateg. Alternative Teaching Strateg Objective Generate ordered pairs for given values of a function. Some students ma need additional practice evaluating functions. Remind students that when ou evaluate a function, ou appl a rule to an input value to generate an output. Understanding the rule that is being applied is critical to completing a function table. Write the following function table on the board and have students cop it on their paper. 3( ) 3( ) 3( ) 3( ) 3( ) Have students consider the rule that is being applied to the input values,,,,, and. Have a volunteer tr to write an algebraic epression that represents the rule. Guide the volunteer if needed. ( 3 ) Then have students write the function in the center column of the table and complete the function table. Have students work in pairs for the net part of the eercise. Instruct each student to write down a function (rule) in the form of an algebraic epression (e.g. 6), but not show their partner. Each student should then create a function table similar to the one above for their function. The should use boes, rather than variables, as above. When the have created their tables, the should echange papers, tr to figure out their partner s rule, and then complete the table. Repeat the eercise until ou feel comfortable that students understand how to complete function tables. Copright Holt McDougal. 67 Álgebra Estás listo? Intervención enriquecimiento

3 SKILL 6 Are You Read? Squares and Square Roots Teaching Skill 6 Objective Find the square or square root of a number. Review the definition and the eample of square of numbers. Stress that squaring a number is NOT the same as doubling a number. Ask: What is the square of 3? (9) Review the definition and the eample of perfect squares. Ask: What are the first three perfect square numbers? (,, 9) Alternative Teaching Strateg Objective Find the square of a number. Materials needed: graph paper Tell students the can use graph paper to help determine what the square of a number is and whether a number is a perfect square. Instruct students to form a larger shaded square b shading 3 rows and 3 columns on the graph paper. Review the definition and the eample of square roots. Ask: What is the square root of 9? (3) Point out that squaring a number and taking the square root of a number undo each other: 3 9, 9 3 PRACTICE ON YOUR OWN In eercises, students find the squares of numbers. In eercises 5 8, students find the square roots of numbers. In eercises 9 6, students determine if a number is a perfect square, and if so, find its positive square root. CHECK Determine that students know how to identif perfect square numbers and how to take square roots. Students who successfull complete the Practice on Your Own and Check are read to move on to the net skill. COMMON ERRORS Students ma double a number instead of squaring it when raising the number to the second power. Students who made more than 3 errors in the Practice on Your Own, or who were not successful in the Check section, ma benefit from the Alternative Teaching Strateg. Point out that this is the geometric representation of 3 squared because it forms a square of length 3 and width 3. Have students count the number of small squares inside the larger square. There are a total of 9. Ask: Aside from counting, how would ou find the area of the larger square? (Multipl the length times the width, 3 3.) Equate this to the fact that 3 squared, or 3, is equal to 3 3 or 9. Have students repeat this eercise with the numbers 5 and 6. Ask: What is 5? (5) What is 6? (36) Remind students that squared is the same thing as raised to the second power. Net, have students tr to shade small squares in the shape of a larger square. Ask? Is it possible to form a large square using small squares? (No) Tell students that a number is not a perfect square if the are not able to form a large square. Have students tr to form a large square with the numbers, 8, 9, and. Ask: Which of the numbers are perfect squares? ( and 9) Copright Holt McDougal. 3 Álgebra Estás listo?
