1 Did you know that more than 10,000 construction workers suffer eye injuries each year? Eye injuries can occur from flying particles, dust, heat, optical radiation, ultraviolet light, chips, struck-by injuries, and getting splashed or sprayed with chemicals. Even when an eye injury is considered minor, it can still cause a lifetime of vision problems and pain. The good news is that most eye injuries are preventable and that safety eyewear comes in many types, styles, and sizes so wearing eye protection really is easy and comfortable. When you re on the jobsite, you should wear eye protection at all times. PPE for your eyes and face is designed to protect your eyesight. The standard for safety glasses is set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) so you should make sure your safety glasses are marked ANSI Z87. Be aware that you may need more protection than you can get from safety glasses alone. Before you start a task, make a plan and think about all of the hazards involved. If you are working in conditions that expose you to hazards like splashing chemicals or flying particles, you may need additional protection like goggles or a face shield. Make sure your safety glasses have side shields to help prevent fragments, particles, chips, and dirt from flying into your eyes from the sides. Remember that regular sunglasses are not made to resist impact, so they are not a safe choice for work. When you work outside in the sun, wear safety glasses that have tinted lenses. Then switch to glasses with Protecting Your Eyesight clear lenses when you work indoors. If you normally wear prescription glasses, and wear safety glasses or goggles over them, be careful to get a proper and comfortable fit so your eyes are truly protected. It s a good idea to get outfitted with prescription safety glasses and/or goggles. Know what to do in case of an eye injury. Locate eyewash stations today, before you need them. If you get chemicals in your eyes, immediately flush them with water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses as you continue rinsing your eyes. Contact a medical professional right away. If a flying particle gets into your eye or if you have an object stuck in your eye, do not pull it out. Do not put pressure on your eye or rub your eye. Contact an eye doctor immediately. If you get hit or poked in your eye, hold a cool compress over the eye, but don t press on the eye. A cold ice pack, or ice cubes in a bag or in a clean bandana, will work to reduce the pain and swelling. See a doctor if the pain persists or if your vision is blurry. If you are not sure what kind of PPE to wear to protect your eyesight, ask your supervisor. Don t take chances. You could permanently lose your eyesight in the blink of an eye.
