1 Airless sprayers are tools that use very high pressures and a special nozzle (or spray tip) to break up liquids, like paint, into very small droplets. In the case of paint, airless sprayers make painting quick, allow for even and thorough coverage, generally create less mess than air sprayers, and are faster than using rollers or brushes. But there is no free lunch airless sprayers have some significant hazards. Today we ll discuss three of those hazards: exposure to toxic materials, fires and explosions, and injection injuries. Exposure to toxic materials: When you paint with an airless sprayer, you risk inhaling toxic vapors. Because the paint is airborne, toxic vapors are released into the air at a higher rate. If you re working in a room with poor ventilation, you could get sick. If you re working in a confined space, you could die. Read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), and protect your lungs with respiratory protection when you use a sprayer. Fires and explosions: You can be exposed to fire and explosion hazards if flammable paint vapors come in contact with an ignition source. Don t smoke or use the sprayer around open flames or tools that spark. Injection hazards: Airless sprayers operate at very high pressure, typically between 300 and 7,500 psi. At these pressures, if the stream comes in contact with your skin, the fluid being sprayed can be injected right through your skin and into your body. The injury might look like a typical cut but it s much more dangerous. Injection injuries are serious. The paint (or other fluid) can result in poisoning, deep tissue damage, and deep infections. Some cases Airless Sprayers result in amputations. Seek medical attention right away. Be sure to bring the SDS for the paint (or other fluid) with you to the emergency clinic. Follow these work practices when using airless sprayers: Read and follow the manufacturer s instructions and guidelines for safe operation. Read the SDS for information on the PPE you ll need when operating the sprayer, or even when working near someone who is spraying. PPE may include safety glasses, goggles, lightweight disposable clothing, gloves, and a respirator. Spray in well-ventilated areas. Never point the spray or the sprayer toward your skin, your clothing, or any other person. Don t ever remove safety devices or other protective devices from the equipment. They are designed to protect you. Never feel for leaks with your hands or try to stop a leak with your hand or finger. Don t use low-pressure fittings or hoses on high-pressure equipment. Use a tip guard when spraying. Put the safety on when the sprayer is not in use. SAFETY REMINDER Hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and fuel injectors also create injection hazards. MEETING DOCUMENTATION JOB NAME: MEETING DATE: ATTENDEES: S.A.F.E.
