El pretérito imperfecto The imperfect tense
Cuando usar el pretérito imperfecto: It is used for giving descriptions in the past. Mi hotel estaba muy límpio. My hotel was quite clean. El hotel tenía una piscina muy grande. The hotel had a big swimming pool.
Cosas a tener en cuenta: You use the preterite tense for single events in the past and the imperfect tense for repeated or continuous actions in the past: Yo estaba de vacaciones - Imperfect Monté a caballo- Preterite PASADO PRESENTE FUTURO
Como funciona? How does it work? The imperfect tense is formed by taking the infinitive of a verb, removing the endings (-ar, -er, -ir) and then adding the following endings.
The endings Estar (to be) Tener (to have) Vivir (to live) (yo) estaba (I was) Tenía vivía (tú) estabas (you were) Tenías vivías (él/ella) estaba (he/she was) Tenía vivía (nosotros) estábamos (we were) Teníamos vivíamos (vosotros) estabais (you were) Teníais vivíais (ellos) estaban (they were) tenían vivían
Note that er and ir verbs take the same endings in the imperfect. (only 3 verbs are irregular in the imperfect tense).
Vamos a practicar
The irregular verbs Ser (to be) Ir (to go) Ver (to see) (yo) era iba veía (tú) eras ibas veías (él/ella) era iba veía (nosotros) éramos íbamos veíamos (vosotros) erais ibais veíais (ellos) eran iban veían
Ahora te toca escribir a ti: Escribe 2 frases usando la informacion de los dibujos. Ejemplo: me alojé... / estaba / era / tenía / no había...
Lee: Decide si las vacaciones fueron positivas, (P), negativas (N) o Positivas y negativas (P+N). Que era lo peor y lo mejor? (what was the worst / the best thing about each person s holiday)
Make sure that you give opinions. Also, add justifications for yours opinions to aim higher level). What was the best /worst about you holiday?.
