3 1. Click on Stage. 2. Click on Choose backdrop from library. 2. Choose a sprite. 1. Click on New sprite. When you click on a sprite in the sprite library you can see underneath how many costumes that sprite has e.g. the selected bat has 2 costumes. 3

4 The Scratch blocks are organized into eight color-coded categories: motion, looks, sound, pen, events, control, sensing, numbers, and variables. Drag a MOVE block into the Scripts area and make the cat move. Drag a MOVE block into the Scripts area and move the cat. 4

9 Activity 1: Motion 1. Select these objects from the Scratch gallery. 2. With this blocks create motion for the objects, put in the correct order. Activity 2: underwater animation 1. Open a new Scratch project. 2. Select an underwater backdrop. 3. Select some underwater sprites. 4. Using different types of movement create an underwater animation. 5. Have your sprites move left, right, up and down. 9

10 Activity 3: Jungle animation 1. Select a jungle backdrop. 2. Select some jungle sprites. 3. Using different types of movement (left/right, up/down, glide, turn) looks (next costume) and create a jungle animation. Activity 4: Flying Bat Animation 1. Create a night time scene by using dark colors. In the example I ve suggested the pyramids of Egypt under a pail moon. You may draw any night time scene you wish. 2. Choose sprites and import them, maybe bat1 or bat2, or both if you prefer. 3. Change the rotation of the Sprite to don t rotate. 4. Using different types of movement (point towards: mouse-pointer) looks (next costume). Activity 5: Gliding counting ghosts and dragon 1. This script involves 4 speites. 2. They take turns gliding towards the centre of the screen 3. This is how they do it. 10

11 4. Modify the script so that each Sprite counts by 1 and says the new counter i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4 then 5, 6, 7, 8 and so on. Each Sprite plays a different sound after Saying the number. 5. Modify the script so that each Sprite hides after doing its stuff and shows itself for the next round. 6. Change the script to 6 Sprites counting, making sounds and disappearing. Activity 6: Handball game In this exercise we will create a simple animation that will look like a game of hand ball. The blue paddle will move left and right (using the left and right arrow keys). When the paddle intercepts the ball a point is scored and the ball changes trajectory randomly (a -45 to +45 degree angle change). The program has an initial trajectory set for the ball and an initial starting position for the paddle. For the ball you can see from the sprite information window that the direction is set to 43 and the x and y starting position of the ball sprite is x = 14 and y = 28. The Programming Stage I For the paddle code you may use the simple code found here on the left. There are three blocks of code. The When Flag Clicked sets the start position of the paddle s x coordinate. The other two blocks of code listen for the right and left arrow key press and move the paddle in the left or right direction. 11
