8 Chapter 2: Introduction 2.0 Introduction 2.1 Product Overview Universal Serial Bus (USB) has become the connectivity workhorse of today's PCs. However, many commercial and industrial devices still use the RS-422/485 interface. The is a simple and reliable solution. Specifically designed for industrial applications, the provides 3000 volt optical isolation with 15 KV ESD protection. The slim-line DIN Rail mountable enclosure has a small footprint and, since it draws power from your computer s USB bus, no additional power supply is required. Simply plug the converter into an available USB port on your computer or USB hub and install the drivers supplied on the CD ROM. The device will show up as two additional COM ports in the Windows Device Manager, and it is fully compatible with your Windows applications. 2.2 What s Included Software CD-ROM 3-ft. (1-m) USB cable This Quick Start Guide 3.0 DIN Rail Installation Attach the converter to the DIN rail. Figure 3-1. To fasten the converter to the DIN rail: 1. Slide and hold the DIN clip toward the bottom of the converter. 2. Angle the top portion of the DIN mount over the top of the DIN rail. Angle the converter so that it is parallel with the DIN rail. 3. Let go of the DIN clip. The spring should return the unit to its original position. Page 8

9 Chapter 4: Driver Installation 4.0 Driver Installation Connect the converter to a USB port on your PC; the Found New Hardware Wizard will run multiple times once to install the USB device and once for each serial COM port. When prompted to connect to Windows Update to search for the driver, select No, not at this time and click on Next. Figure 4-1. The Introduction screen for the Found New Hardware Wizard. Figure 4-2. 11 Chapter 4: Driver Installation 4.1 Check the Drivers After your drivers have been installed, you will need to verify that they have been installed properly. From the Start menu, navigate to My Computer and right-click on it. Select Properties from the pop-up menu. When the following Control Panel appears, click on the Hardware tab. Figure 4-5. Click on Device Manager and expand the USB Controllers tree. Verify that the USB Serial Converter is listed. Then expand the Ports (COM & LPT) tree. The USB Serial Port will be listed as the next available COM ports. NOTE: The is designed as a Locked Serial Number device, which means that each unit has the same electronic serial number. This makes it great for applications in which a pool of converters is shared. NOTE: The Locked Serial Number feature enables different USB to Serial converters to share a single COM port (one at a time). You will only need to install the drivers once. Page 11

The signal names on the front label are only visible when the terminal block is removed. Configure the converter for RS Wire. 2. Cross connect the transmit and receive lines. 3. Connect a PC to the USB Port. 4. Using HyperTerminal or a similar program, connect to the appropriate COM port. Make sure HyperTerminal local echo is OFF. 5. Transmit data. If the same character string is returned, the test is good.
