3 The Spanish Royal Family The relationship of the Royal Family with this training ship started in 1928, when H.M. Alfonso the 13th the King, embarked in Cadiz for the transit for Malaga, during her trial trip. On July the 4th that same year, the ship was given in San Sebastian, her "Combat Flag" from the hands of H.R.H. D.ª Beatriz the Infanta. Subsequently, some other members of the Royal Family have been on board in several occasions when receiving or seeing her off. H.M. Juan Carlos the 1st the King, embarked Juan Sebastian de Elcano when He was Prince, during the 30th Training Trip. She left Cadiz on January the 10th 1958, and D. Juan Carlos did the trip with the same treatment and regime as the rest of the Midshipmen. He disembarked in Norfolk after having called at the ports of Las Palmas, Santo Domingo, Cristobal, Balboa, Callao y Cartagena de Indias. H.R.H. D. Juan de Borbon, embarked during the 50th Training Trip and 5th circumnavigation of the globe in 1979, just for the transit from Honolulu to Manila. H.R.H. Felipe the Prince, embarked in Cadiz to complete His training as a midshipman during the 58th Training Trip. As His father, He didn't have any special privilege or prerogative either while being on board. He called at the ports of Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Salvador de Bahia, Santo Domingo and Baltimore, where He disembarked on May the 24th H.M. Sofia the Queen, embarked on July 2001 near Cabrera Island (Balearic Islands) and remained on board for two days until the ship called at Palma de Mallorca. On October 2003, both the King and the Queen embarked again to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first time of a royal member joining this ship during a trip, as it was said in previous paragraphs.

4 The first circumnavigation of the globe and Juan Sebastián de Elcano It is surprising that an epic deed of such importance for Spain and the civilised world as was the first circumnavigation of the globe should be so little known. Fame for this exploit has commonly been attributed to Hernando de Magellanes (Magellan), an outstanding figure in his age, who was appointed head of the expedition by Emperor Charles I of Spain. But Magellan did not live to see the end of the expedition, being killed by natives of Saint Lazarus Island in the Philippines. This tragic event, one of the most serious suffered by the members of the expedition, although in no way diminishing the merits of Magellan, gave the glory to that brave and indomitable seaman Elcano. and his name has been preserved for posterity. He led the 17 survivors of the expedition to the end of their incredible adventure, returning to Spain and informing the Emperor, then at Valladolid, of the voyage's success. Juan Sebastián de Elcano was born in 1476 at Guetaria, a little fishing port in the province of Guipuzcoa, on the north coast of Spain. This is a region in which some of the most famous Spanish admirals were born. From its coasts sailed the brave navigators who reached Terranova in the middle ages. There lived the men whose feats laid the roots of Spanish Naval tradition. Like them, Elcano listened to the call of the sea. He served in the Africa campaign under Cardinal Cisneros with his own ship, and when Charles I sent Magellan to the Indies with five galleons in search of a route to the East, Elcano was appointed navigation officer of the galleon Concepcion. Her Captain was Gaspar de Quesada. The Trinidad, Santiago, San Antonio and Victoria were the other galleons of the expedition. On september 27, 1519, they weighed anchor at Sanlucar de Barrameda under the command of Magellan and sailed to the coast of Patagonia, where the Santiago was lost. Later, the San Antonio returned to Spain. The other ships crossed the straits, which were then called the «Straits of Magellan», and reached the Pacific Ocean on November 27, The Concepcion, the Trinidad and the Victoria achieved the incredible feat for such primitive boats of crossing the Pacific Ocean to the Philippines, which Magellan, called the «Saint Lazarus» Islands. On April 27, 1521, Magellan was killed in a skirmish with the natives and was succeeded in command by Duarte de Mendoza, who likewise was killed shortly afterwards at the hands of natives of the island of Cebu. The Captain of the Victoria, Gonzalo Gómez de Mendoza, assumed command, appointing Elcano as navigation officer. Later, the explorers had to get rid of the Concepcion because illness and all sorts of misfortunes had wreaked havoc among her crew. Finally, Elcano was left as chief of the survivors, and he set out for the Molucca Islands, where the Trinidad also had to be abandoned. After taking a cargo of spices on board the Victoria, Elcano made for Spain with 47 Spanish survivors and 13 natives. They passed the Cape of Good Hope on May 19, 1522, and arrived at the Cape Verde Islands on July 7. When the Victoria set sail from Cape Verde on the last stage of the voyage, there were only 22 ill and exhausted men on board. They sighted the Spanish coast on September 6 and two days later Juan Sebastian de Elcano, together with 17 survivors, landed at Sevilla, whereupon they made a pilgrimage to the sanctuaries of «Nuestra Señora de la Victoria» and «Nuestra Señora de la Antigua». Charles I, who at the time was in Valladolid, granted Elcano part of the value of the merchandise carried by the «Victoria» as well as the use of a coat of arms with a terraqueous globe and the motto, «Primus circumdedisti me» (You were the first to circumnavigate me). Juan Sebastian de Elcano died on August 4, 1526, in Malaysia on board the galleon Sta. María de la Victoria, in the course of another voyage in which Cape Horn was discovered, and his body was buried at sea. The great Spaniard who unveiled the ancient mystery of the shape of the earth to mankind lies in this vast and majestic tomb, as well as three other survivors of the Victoria (boatswain Juan de Acurio, seaman Juan de Arratia and cabin boy Juan de Zubileta); together they embodied the virtues and characteristics of the Basque contribution to Spain's history. In 1980, a marble statue was dedicated to Elcano's memory in Guetaria, with inscriptions in Latin, Basque and Spanish. On May 28, 1861, another statue made of bronze was erected in his native town, where every year colourful ceremonies are held to celebrate the return of the first circumnavigator of the globe. In 1960, the United States Navy nuclear submarine Triton, followed the same route, always under water, as that taken by the Victoria 438 years earlier under the comand of Juan Sebastian de Elcano. After completing the first underwater voyage round the earth, the U.S.S. Triton made for the coast of Cádiz on May 2, 1960 and after more than two and a half months under the sea, it surfaced facing the port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, as a mark of tribute by the American crew to their Spanish predecessors. The Triton had a bronze commemorative plaque on board, with the dates of the two voyages of 1522 and 1960 and reproduction of the sailing ship Victoria, surrounded by an inscription in Latin addressed to Juan Sebastian de Elcano with the words, «Ave nobilis Dux, iterum factum est» (Greetings, noble Captain, it has been done again).

5 COAT OF ARMS «Juan Sebastián de Elcano s» It was granted to him by Emperor Charles the 1st as a reward for his glorious deeds. The shield is made up of two parts. The upper part consists of a gilded castle on a field of gules, and in the lower part sticks of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove stand in a field of gold. Above the shield there is a closed helmet with a crest consisting of a globe with the Latin motto TU PRIMUS CIRCUM- DEDIDSTI ME, to highlight the fact that the World was spherical and Juan Sebastian de Elcano was the first to circumnavigate it.

6 History summary of the ship The building of the Juan Sebastian de Elcano was ordered under the Royal Decree of April 17, 1925, according to the plans and blueprints drawn up by the ECHE- VARRIETA Y LARRINAGA shipyards of Cadiz, and works began on November 24 of the same year. The ship was launched on March 5, 1927, and delivered to the Navy on August 17, The whole process of building was concluded amounting to In 1956 and subsequently in 1978, ambitious modernising works were carried out in the Carraca Naval Shipyards (San Fernando). Also, from September 2001 to March 2002, from July 2005 to February 2006 and from May 2011 from April 2012, some modification works were done to improve the habitability, quality of life and changes in engine room and electricity generating plant. The hull is made of iron. There are four masts (called «Blanca», «Almansa», «Asturias» and «Nautilus», after other training ships which preceded the Elcano ). Up to now, the Elcano has sailed on eighty three training cruises, most of them long, including ten circumnavigations of the globe. The first of these took place between August 1928 and May 1929 and was commanded by Commander Manuel de Mendivil y Elio. The route was in the opposite direction to that taken by Magellan s and Elcano s vessel Victoria on the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1522; she rounded the Cape of Good Hope, but not Cape Horn, since she returned by the Panama Canal. On her second cruise around the world, between 1930 and 1931 and in the same direction as the Victoria, her Commanding officer was Claudio Lago de Lanzos. The third circumnavigation, between August 1934 and May 1935, was commanded by Salvador Moreno. The fourth began in November 1971 and concluded in August 1972, with Ricardo Vallespin as Commanding Officer. The fifth, coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of the «Elcano s» delivery to the Navy, took place from November 1978 to August 1979, under the command of Captain Luis Díaz del Río. The sixth, under the command of Captain Cristobal Colón, started on December 1981, and concluded on July The seventh under the command of Captain Gabriel Portal Antón, started on September 1987, and concluded on July In this circumnavigation the ship participated in the events of Tall ship s 88 in Australia. Her eigth circumnavigation got underway on October 1992 to Jully Under the orders of Captain Angel Tajuelo Pardo de Andrade. From December 1996 to August 1997 she performed her ninth circumnavigation under the orders of Captain Sebastián Zaragoza Soto. 7 The Spanish Navy Training Ship This venerable sailing vessel is the training ship for Spanish Midshipmen. But if we could draw aside the veil of reticence of a seasoned fighting man, we would find, hidden in the recesses of his seafarer s heart, a beautiful white memory, a wing, a sailing ship of foam, nostalgia made up of aromas, lurches and seagulls, something pure, ancient and beloved. Perhaps his youth itself. Because the Elcano, as they call her, is everything that is no longer found in the austere grey vessels of present day naval warfare. The Elcano is above all white, silent, clean, slow, luminous and young. She is far-off and fresh adventure, absence, an unforgettable storm, comradeship, and, more than anything, she is the sea. The ancient sea of enormous waves and strong winds. The bewilered sea of still calm. The lighearted, pitted sea of sudden gusts of wind and albatrosses. Of brown, floating seaweed, cetaceans, flotsam, the gentle creaking of rigging and the strange words of nautical jargon. The Elcano is, in short, for the Naval Officer, his poetry and his longing. The study plan for Spanish Navy Officers lasts five years. It includes this cruise during the fourth year. Midshipmen learn here the foundation of their seaworthy training that will accompany them throughout their careers. During their first and second years at the Naval Academy the Cadets take the basic subjects of their studies many of which are the same as those taught at university. During the third, fourth and fifth years they take eminently professional courses, but it is in the fourth that they come on board the Juan Sabastián de Elcano, when they have their first tough contac with the sea and the on board cohabitation for long periods; these are the origins of the traditional custom to use sailing ships for this purpose. The identification of man with his enviroment is a matter of continuity and perseverance, of familiarity with the roots and the specific nomenclature of a language. In a sailing ship, all these conditions are seen in their elemental freshness, from the etymology of the names to the roughness of life at sea, which forge men and their styles upon imbuing them with the principles, traditions and devotion to the service which shape the spirit of the Naval Profession.
