2. Introduction With the 2- to 4-Wire Converter, you can use a 2-wire modem on a 4-wire leased telephone line. It s a passive device that enables conversion of 2-wire analog modems for use on 4-wire 600-ohm leased lines. The Converter connects to the modem and the line via your choice of RJ-11 or screw-terminal connectors. You can also mix RJ-11 and screw-terminal connections, if necessary. Both the 2-wire and 4-wire connections are insensitive to polarity. Since the Converter receives power from the attached device, it requires no external power supply. NOTE The Converter is designed to operate with 600-ohm VF leased lines only. It s not intended for use on dial-up lines. 6

3.1 What to Do First 3. Installation 2- TO 4-WIRE HYBRID CONVERTER The Converter is designed to work with 2-wire leased-line modems with a transmit level of 0 dbm. Make sure that your modem is set at this level before you install the Converter. For instructions on setting the transmit level, refer to your modem s user manual or call the modem s manufacturer. 3.2 Installing the Converter The Converter is designed to operate with 600-ohm VF leased lines only. Follow these steps to install the Converter: 1. Connect the two-wire modem to the terminal screw block or the RJ-11 connector on the 2W side of the Converter. 2. Connect the four-wire line Transmit and Receive pairs to the 4W terminal screw blocks marked TD and RD, or connect the line to the RJ-11 modular jack marked 4W. Figure 3-1 shows a schematic diagram of the connections. 3 4 2 3 4 5 2/4 WIRE HYBRID Figure 3-1. 2- and 4-wire connections on the Converter. NOTE You can mix terminal and jack connections, if required. Both the twowire and four-wire connections are not sensitive to polarity, so you can connect either terminal to Tip or Ring. 7

3. Your Converter is installed and ready for operation. 8

4. Application 2- TO 4-WIRE HYBRID CONVERTER Figure 4-1 shows a typical application of the 2- to 4-Wire Hybrid Converter. Figure 4-1. Typical application of the Converter. 9
