2 King s British Education - Overview

3 The Key Stages Key Stage 4 GCSE & IGCSE This is an important stage in your child s education. It is the start of a two-year programme of study that will culminate in examinations that are set and marked by examination boards in the U.K Key Stage 5 A Levels This is the two years of preparation towards University. A levels are much more difficult than GCSEs and far more in depth. Pupils will only study between 3 and 5 subjects. There is greater emphasis on independence and analytical thinking.

Presentations, Parents evenings and course material distributed. 5 What should I study? Our pupils receive a lot of guidance about what the best options are for them. It is a combination of what they are best at, what they enjoy and what they need to get into specific courses or careers. Getting it right is important. It will determine future options, hence working together as a school, parents and pupils is essential.

8 A Levels We offer a range of subjects which suit a variety of different pathways to study at University. Pupils have a free choice of subjects.

10 How many can I study? The vast majority of students in the UK will study 4 AS levels (year 12) and continue with 3 A Levels in those subjects to A2 level (year 13). Most of our pupils study 4 A Levels. For students who have a track record of academic excellence, we are able to offer the option of studying an additional A level, hence 5 A Levels in total. Ideally, you should be challenged by the amount of subjects you study, but not overwhelmed. Where you are planning to study could also influence the number of subjects you take.

12 Entry requirements To enter the Sixth Form, you need to have achieved 5 GCSE grades, at grade C including English and Maths (4 under the new system). To study an A level subject, you should have achieved a B (6) or above in it at GCSE. You will also be required to sit an interview with the Head of Sixth Form, in which your school report, predicted grades and attitude to school life will be a focus. We can explore different options such as studying over three years or looking at other awards if you are struggling to make the entry requirements. This can be discussed on an individual basis.

14 ACCESO A LAS UNIVERSIDADES ESPAÑOLAS A TRAVÉS DE A-LEVELS Se puede acceder a cualquier universidad española, pública o privada, a través de los exámenes de A-level y mediante una correspondencia de calificaciones. La LOE de mayo de 2006, y su subsiguiente reforma LOMCE del 9 de diciembre de 2013, dictan que los alumnos procedentes de sistemas educativos de Estados miembros de la Unión Europea o de los otros Estados con los que se hayan suscrito acuerdos internacionales, en régimen de reciprocidad, podrán acceder a la Universidad española en las mismas condiciones que quienes hayan obtenido el título de Bachiller recogido en la legislación española( )

15 UNED Los estudiantes de A - Level están legalmente exentos de realizar cualquier otra prueba de final de bachillerato. Con la nueva LOMCE es probable que las universidades redacten su propio examen de acceso. La UNED es el intermediario entre las instituciones españolas y los tribunales de los exámenes ingleses.

16 LOMCE La reforma de la ley educativa en Bachillerato entrará en vigor a partir del curso Este cambio afectará a aquellos alumnos que ahora se encuentran en Year 12 y los cursos sucesivos. Sus exámenes de A-level seguirán contando para nota.

17 REQUISITOS 1.Notas de Year 12 y las predicciones de las notas de Year 13. En el caso de los estudiantes procedentes del sistema educativo de Reino Unido, las certificaciones de las materias del GCSE y GCE deberán ser expedidas por entidades examinadoras reconocidas. 2. Fotocopia compulsada de la certificación académica de los dos últimos cursos de la educación secundaria. En aquellos sistemas educativos donde se aplique más de una escala de calificaciones positivas de mínimo a máximo aprobatorio, deberá constar en la certificación académica la escala a emplear. 3. Copia de impresora de la inscripción en la UNED con el resguardo bancario correspondiente al pago de los precios públicos de verificación de estudios europeos para el acceso a la universidad y tasas correspondientes (ejemplares nº 1 y nº 2 de este impreso validados y sellados por cualquier Oficina de la Red Banco Santander, o el justificante de la transacción online o bien el justificante de transferencia sellado por la entidad bancaria desde la que se realiza) Acceso provisional que se formaliza en agosto cuando llegan las notas de IGCSE.

24 GCSE We offer a combination of subjects that allow pupils to keep a broad education. Pupils have a range of core compulsory subjects as well as 4 OPTIONS.

25 Changes to GCSE The grading system for GCSE examinations is changing for GCSE course in September Instead of grades being given from A*-G, the new system will be numerical from 9-1 as shown here. IGCSE courses will change in September 2017, except for Mathematics and English, which change this coming year.

27 Choosing Options We try and build the timetable around pupils choices. However, we cannot always manage to give the first choice options, so we also ask for 2 reserve options as well.

28 Choosing Options Your choice should be based on: What you enjoy; What you are good at and can do well in; What you might need for future study and careers.

29 Considerations Aptitude and ability for a subject. Potential for benefitting from the course. Overall choice of options working together. Can only do Separate Sciences if you achieve a level 7 or above in your End of Key Stage Science Exams Subjects such as Art and Music should be carefully discussed with the subject teachers as a strong level of skill, ability and creativity is needed to achieve high grades.

30 The Options Booklet Please do use it. It has lots of information to help you make the right choice.

31 What next? Pupils talk to teachers and parents to help decide on which subjects to choose. Use the options booklet and suggested websites to help you make a decision. Complete the Options form indicating 4 first choices and 2 reserve choices. Hand it in to Mr Snowden or Mrs Green. Complete the final form choosing one subject from each block.
