Optimization of the prototypes in WWTP in Ontinyent, studying the most important parameters as Chemist Oxygen demand (COD), Total suspended solid (TSS), Total phosphorus (TP), N-NH4 and Conductivity. Finally, it was evaluated the efficiency of the proposed eco-innovative technology, always in comparison with the current treatment of the wastewaters in Urban WWTP. Establishment of the conclusions studying all the obtained results Page 3
2. ADEQUACY OF THE FACILITIES IN URBAN WWTP IN ONTINYENT EGEVASA choose the urban WWTP located in Ontinyent to perform the demonstration with second prototype, because they have very completed facilities to treat wastewaters and they consume high quantities of ferric chloride, in order to remove the total phosphorus. People from EGEVASA, responsible of WWTP in Ontinyent, choose the adequate place, prepare the installations where located the prototype and all the required connections (water supply, power, compressed air ). a) b) Figure 1: Pictures of potential places to locate the prototype: a) Close to the tertiary treatment, which nowadays is empty. b) Close to the biological reactors and decantation units. On the other hand, people from SEVYECO and AITEX performed some visits in order to know the current operation mode of WWTP in Ontinyent, being that the treatment procedures were more complicated than industrial ones. The prototype should reproduce part of the real treatment in plant, to obtain good results with the demonstration, using ADNATUR coagulant. In real plant, the biological depuration was done in two phases; Phase A, where the major quantity of organic pollution was degraded and Phase B, where the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus were removed. The prototype should receive the wastewater coming from decantation unit in Phase A, it should reproduce biological degradation of nitrogen in Phase B and eliminate the total phosphorous with the physic-chemical treatment, (see figure 2). a) Figure 2: Pictures of real installation in WWTP in Ontinyent a) Decantation unit of Phase A b) Biological reactor of phase B with nitrification and denitrification processes. Page 4
The most important requirements to install the prototype were: - Size of the prototype: 7 m long X 2 m wide. - Electrical connection: three phase connection, neutral line for power of 4 kw. - Water supply diameter of pipes: 24,4 mm. - The outlet is ready for download by gravity. 7m 2m Figure 3: Picture of second prototype in SERVYECO facilities. As it said, the prototype should be feed directly with the wastewater coming from current facilities; the canalizations can be seen in figure 4-a, which were connected to the prototype inlet in figure 4-b. Compressed air connections were needed too, and a pipe to supply clean water to prepare the chemical solutions with natural coagulant. Electrical connections were done too with the distribution panel and compressor, (see figure 4). a) a) a) Figure 4: Pictures of a) Wastewater connections with the prototype b) Inlet to the prototype and electrical panel distribution c) Compressor to aerate the prototype biological reactor. 6 3. START UP, FINE-TUNING AND OPTIMIZATION OF THE PROTOTYPE IN URBAN WWTP IN ONTINYENT 3.1 Transport of the prototype from SERVYECO to Urban WWTP in Ontinyent The pilot plant was moved from SERVYECO facilities to WWTP in Ontinyent during April It was necessary to subcontract a lorry with crane services to move and discharge the pilot plant. Figure 5 Pictures show both sides of the prototype in lorry crane in WWTP of Ontinyent. People from SERVYECO, EGEVASA and AITEX were attending the discharging works of the prototype in WWTP of Ontinyent. a) b) c) Figure 6. 7 3.2. Installation of the prototype in urban WWTP and adjustment of all the operation parameters. The urban WWTP facilities is constituted by a pretreatment with a scabble unit, which remove the largest objects that have been trapped by the wastewaters, and degreaser. Then the wastewaters are treated in secondary treatment with two biological reactors; Phase A, removes the organic pollution and Phase B, removes the nutrients with nitrification and denitrification processes. The plant has too a tertiary treatment with coagulation and flocculation processes but nowadays is empty because the quality of water accomplish the poured law without this treatment. Finally, the treated wastewaters are disinfected with ultraviolet lamps. Although initially it was going to work in the prototype with wastewaters coming from the tertiary, finally, the pilot plant was fed with the wastewater, coming from decantation unit of Phase A, where the organic contamination was eliminated, in order to eliminate the nitrogen and phosphorous, (see Figure 7). Figure 7: Treatment flow in urban WWTP in Ontinyent. Pilot plant has been fed with wastewater coming from decantation of Phase A, in order to reproduce the Phase B in pilot plant. Phase B eliminates nitrogen and phosphorous During demonstration phase in pilot plant, ferric chloride has been substituted by ADNATUR coagulant, in order to remove the phosphorus and improved the sludge quality to obtain biogas. Figure 8 shows some photographs of different parts of prototype, which was empty, before filling it of wastewater coming from decantation unit of Phase A. Page 7

3.3. Optimization of the prototype in Urban Wastewater Treatments Prototype operation activities in urban WWTP in Ontinyent. Operation and optimizing actions were developed from May 2015, to July These actions were done through the analysis of treated wastewaters, studying the most important parameters as chemist oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solid (TSS),, conductivity, total phosphorous (TP) and ammoniac nitrogen (N-NH4). Two samples were collected, four or five times a week: - One sample from Decantation PHASE A (Inlet to pilot reactor) - One sample from pilot, outlet The evolution of obtained results are presented in figures from 11 to 32: Figure 11. COD, TSS and CONDUCTIVITY results from the prototype during May Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour Public Hydraulic Domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. Page 10
Figure 12. N-NH4 and TP results from the prototype during May Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour public hydraulic domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. During first month of functioning, it was necessary to adjust some variables and parameters in pilot plant as aeration, sludge recirculation, dosage of chemicals, quantity, concentration and viscosity of the chemicals in preparation procedures, residence time of wastewaters, wastewater flow and flow of sludge discharge. The efficiencies in COD and TSS eliminations were so good, close to 90% even though the elimination of nutrients were so good because most of them are in the discharge limit (see figures 11 and 12). Figure 13. COD, TSS and CONDUCTIVITY results from the prototype during June Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour Public Hydraulic Domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. It can be seen in figure 13 in spite of the low values of discharge limit to the Public Hydraulic Domain, the treated wastewater from prototype values were just in the discharge limits. Page 11
Figure 14. N-NH4 and TP results from the prototype during June Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour public hydraulic domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. After two months of functioning it can been said that the prototype works so good, in spite of the difficulty of reproducing the biological reactor functions; nitrification and denitrification. (See figure 16). Regarding conductivity, it can been seen in some charts that decrease lightly, because of this coagulant do not need any chemical to adjust the. Figure 15. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour public hydraulic domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. Figures 15 to 20 show the obtained results in prototype during summer months, when the temperatures are son high and the microorganism decrease their activity and consequently the depuration efficiency, however the results of COD, TSS and Nutrients are very good. The benefits of organic coagulant it is seen reflected in the state and activity of the microorganism. Figure 21. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour Public Hydraulic Domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. On the contrary, the low temperatures affect the nitrification and denitrification processes, so it can be seen some punctual results in the elimination of nutrients worst during this months of autumn and winter. (See figures 24 to 32). Page 16

After nearly one year working with the prototype with the same ADNATUR dosage than Ferric chloride in real installations, it was decided to begin with the optimizing actions decreasing the coagulant dosage. As it can see in table 1, the dosage pumps are programed to dosage the same quantity than in real installation; however, there were some little positive and negative deviations: Table 1 collects coagulant dosage during the year: MONTH DOSAGE of Ferric DOSAGE of ADNATUR REDUCTION of coagulant Clhoride (ppm) coagulant (ppm) consumption (%) May ,00 118,00-28,2 June ,00 104,40-15,5 July ,01 102,20-2,2 August ,00 107,64 8,8 September ,00 118,00-8,2 October ,01 117,13 0,0 November ,00 114,70 4,4 December ,99 117,59 3,6 January ,00 112,50 4,7 February ,00 118,00-16,8 March ,01 109,95-5,7 Average 108,64 112,74-3,7 Table 1. Coagulant dosages during four first months. The elimination of phosphorous depends the physic-chemical treatment. After revising all the obtained results, it can be concluded that the coagulant is working good but the cost is too high so after some jar test trials it was decided to reduce the dosage by half. Page 21
Figure 33. Pictures of Jar Test trials to optimize in lab the ADNATUR coagulant, in order to reduce the cost of the treatment. Figure 34. Pictures of results of Jar Test; after reducing the dosage of ADNATUR coagulant by half the sedimentation volume of the sludges is better using ADNATUR coagulant than Ferric chloride. As of April 2016 the prototype in urban WWTP in Ontinyent were dosaged with nearly 50 ppm of ADANATUR coagulant. The results of this month can be seen in following charts, (figures 35 and 36), they were not so good, the efficiency of COD and TSS decreased and even though there were some results above discharge limits. Regarding nutrients elimination, the results can be improved because there were some of them above discharge limit too. In spite of that, it was decided going on with this dosage during the next month of May. Page 22
Figure 35. COD, TSS and CONDUCTIVITY results from the prototype during April Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour Public Hydraulic Domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. Figure 36. N-NH4 and TP results from the prototype during April Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour public hydraulic domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. Page 23
Figure 37. COD, TSS and CONDUCTIVITY results from the prototype during May Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour Public Hydraulic Domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. The outlet values of COD and TSS of the prototype during May were better than in April so during June the dosage is maintained in half. It can see in figure 37, the first values in the month were worst but from 12 of May they were improving and most of them are below discharge limit. Regarding nutrients elimination it is necessary to notice that the nitrification and denitrification processes were not functioning good but the phosphorous elimination is so good again. Figure 38. N-NH4 and TP results from the prototype during May Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour public hydraulic domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. Page 24
The problematic related with nitrification and denitrification process were associated to the functioning of the compressor that gave some problems at the end of the demonstration related with the maintenance of it. Figure 39. COD, TSS and CONDUCTIVITY results from the prototype during June Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour Public Hydraulic Domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. The outlet values of COD and TSS of the prototype during June were good and the elimination of phosphorous too, there was one value above discharge limit but it was similar when the prototype worked with more ADNATUR coagulant. (See figures 39 and 40). Figure 40. N-NH4 and TP results from the prototype during June Inlet wastewater from decantation unit of Phase A and treated wastewater in prototype. Remark: discharge limits are the limits to pour public hydraulic domain, according to wastewater Spanish law. Page 25
Regarding coagulant dosages, it can be confirm the optimum dosage of ADNATUR coagulant in nearly 50 ppm. Table 2 collects the evolution of coagulant dosage during demonstration phase in urban WWTP in Ontinyent: MONTH DOSAGE of Ferric DOSAGE of ADNATUR REDUCTION of coagulant Clhoride (ppm) coagulant (ppm) consumption (%) May ,00 118,00-28,2 June ,00 104,40-15,5 July ,01 102,20-2,2 August ,00 107,64 8,8 September ,00 118,00-8,2 October ,01 117,13 0,0 November ,00 114,70 4,4 December ,99 117,59 3,6 January ,00 112,50 4,7 February ,00 118,00-16,8 March ,01 109,95-5,7 April ,00 53,36 46,64 May ,00 52,66 46,26 June ,00 52,78 46,14 Average 108,64 112,74 6 Table 2. Coagulant dosages during demonstration phase in urban WWTP in Ontinyent Main conclusions during demonstration phase in Urban WWTP in Ontinyent. Summarizing the obtained conclusions from the demonstration phase, could be said that the obtained results with ADNATUR coagulant in urban WWTP in Ontinyent facilities are also similar than nowadays coagulant (Ferric chloride), however the amount of ferric chloride is twice more than the amount needed with ADNATUR coagulant: Total Phosphorus reductions are between 50-80% obtaining values, which are almost always below the discharge limit, 1 mg/l, average annual value. N-NH4 reductions are between 70-90%, obtaining values which are almost always below discharge limit, 5,4 mg/l ADNATUR coagulant do not interfere in negative way the biological process, as show COD and TSS values. The benefits of organic coagulant it is seen reflected in the good state and activity of the microorganism. ADNATUR coagulant does not modify the CONDUCTIVITY because it does not need neutralizing agent that has been completely removed. Page 26
