4 HOW DOES FINANCIAL AID WORK? COMO TRABAJA LA AYUDA FINANCIERA? Based on family need. Based on income taxes You have to apply for it on a yearly basis. 5 THE TWO TYPES OF AID LOS DOS TIPOS DE AYUDA There are two types of financial aid available for students. Federal Financial Aid or FAFSA Students who qualify for FAFSA are legal residents or Citizens Texas State Financial Aid or TASFA Students who qualify are anyone living in the state of Texas for at least 3 years. 6 FEDERAL AID AYUDA FEDERAL FAFSA: Free Application For Federal Student Aid The FAFSA is a form that is used to electronically apply for Federal Financial Aid. The student who applies using the FAFSA may be eligible for either federal grants or loans. Grants are a form of aid in which the student does not have to pay the money back. (example: Pell Grants) Loans are a form of aid in which the student is given money that has to be paid back by the student with interest. (example: government student loans, parent loans, private student loans, etc ) FASFA: Free Application For Federal Student Aid La FAFSA es el formulario que se usa para aplicar electrónicamente para Ayuda Financiera Federal El estudiante que aplica usando la FAFSA puede ser elegible para otros tipos de ayudas o prestamos. Los Grants son formas de ayuda adonde el estudiante no tiene que repagar el dinero (ex: Pell Grants) Los prestamos son tipos de ayuda se le otorga dinero a los estudiantes pero los estudiantes deben pagar el dinero de regreso y con intereses. (es: prestamos gubernamentales estudiantiles., prestamos a los padres, prestamos privados para estudiantes etc )

Tax transcript (School might ask for it) Either W-2,10-80, FSA ID *Important* Parents may apply for an FSA ID as well The FSA ID is a login feature that is chosen by the applicant Functions as an electronic signature If neither parents have a social security, you must print, sign and send in mail. 9 HB 1403/SB 1528 What is HB 1403/SB 1528? HB 1403 is a Texas law that allows undocumented students eligibility to apply to any public college or university,pay instate tuition costs and receive Texas state financial aid. This law was passed in 2001 and has since been effect here in Texas; benefiting an estimated 15,000 students every year in the state of Texas. Que es HB 1403/SB 1528? HB 1403 es una ley estatal de TEXAS que permite a los estudiantes indocuemtados aplicar para cualquier universidad o colegio, pagando cuotas estatales, recibiendo ayuda finaciera del estado de Texas Esta ley fue aprobada en el año 2001 y desde que tomo efecto en Texas ha beneficiado a mas de 15,000 estudiantes anualmente.

10 REQUIREMENTS REQUISITOS Must have graduated from a Texas high school or received the equivalent of a high school diploma or obtained GED in the Texas Official High school or College Transcripts and Diploma Affidavit of Intent to Become a Permanent Resident (notarized) Selective Service (males from the age of 18-25) Tax Return W-2,10-80 or Haberse graduado de una Preparatoria en Texas o obtenido un diploma equivalente o un GED en el Estado de Texas Transcripts oficiales (records escolares) de high school o collegio y su diploma Tener un Affidavit of Intent to Become a Permanent Resident (notarizado) Servicio selectivo (para todos los varones de 18 a 25) Taxes W-2, o 10-99

11 TASFA: Texas Application for Financial Aid The TASFA application can be found online The money the students receive is in the form of a grant issued by the state of Texas. Undocumented students and students with Deffered Action should use this application. 13 As soon as possible! Financial Aid season starts at the beginning of October. The deadline to apply is usually March 15 th. You may apply after the deadline but you risk not receiving any aid even if you are eligible since it is first come first serve. And the funds may run out. Majority colleges allow you to apply for financial aid without being admitted to the college first, while other colleges require you to be admitted before applying for financial aid.
