Newsletter No.6 XI Men s Pan American Cup, Mexico City Argentina and Cuba will play for the Men s Pan Am Gold MEXICO CITY, Mexico, May 25, 2016. - Argentina and Cuba will play in the Gold Medal match of the XI Men s Pan American Cup after winning their respective semifinals on Wednesday at the Olympic Gymnasium Juan de la Barrera in Mexico City. Argentina edged Canada in one of the most intense battles of the tournament. Argentina won a kilometric first set in what predicted to be a fierce challenge. The same aggressiveness in spikes followed into the second set for the tie. Canadians lost focus in the last set while Argentina continued pushing hard for a five point lead which the North American team struggled to cut short. Cuba and Mexico engaged in several challenging tasks, especially in the first two sets where Mexico s energy was very high. Both teams committed unforced errors, with the difference that the Caribbean team kept the composure while the local guys fell in desperation. This is Argentina s third occasion in reaching the gold medal match, they have never crowned champions. Cuba reached the finals in the 2014 edition, winning the gold to United States. Semifinal Argentina 3, Canada 1 Argentina defeated Canada 3-1 (34-32, 24-26, 25-22, 25-22) in a tough clash. In numbers, Argentina held little advantage in kills (61-59) and in blocks (13-12), Canada (2-1) in serves. Argentina benefited from 33 errors from Canada, while committing 29. Opposite Bruno Lima led Argentina with 19 points, on 17 spikes and 2 blocks; outside hitter Brian Melgarejo scored 18 points, on 16 spikes and 2 blocks; middle blocker Fabian Flores scored 17 points, on 11 spikes and a match-high 6 blocks; and outside hitter Nicolas Lazo added 10 points, on 7 spikes, 2 blocks and 1 ace. Canada s top scorers were outside hitter Jason Derocco with 17 points, on 14 spikes, 2 blocks and 1 ace; opposite Bradley Gunter scored 13 points, on 11 spikes and 2 blocks; and Stephen Maar scored 12 points. Semifinal Cuba 3, Mexico 1 Cuba downed Mexico on Wednesday s second semifinal 3-1 (25-21, 26-28, 25-14, 25-18) and will battle with Argentina for the Gold. Cuba s blocking was crucial to beat Mexico; they held a huge 19-4 advantage. Both teams scored on 40 kills; and Cuba was better in serves only by one point (4-3). Cuba committed 34 unforced errors and Mexico 38. Three players topped Cuba s offence over the net, outside hitters Abrahan Alfonso with 15 points and Osniel Melgarejo with 14; opposite

Costa Rica 3, Honduras 2 Costa Rica beat Honduras 3-2 (25-21, 25-27, 20-25, 28-26, 15-11) a Central American classic that decided the last positions. Costa Rica dismantled Honduras backrow enabling their recovery from a four point deficit in the tie-break. Costa Rica finishes in ninth place, with 1-3 win-loss record and Honduras with a 0-5 mark. Costa Rica held advantage in spikes 64-54 and 12-8 in the blocking category. Honduras was better in serves by only one point 4-3 and committed less errors (34-44) than Costa Rica.
