Selecting Books for Children Up To Age - : In Response to Psychological vs. Morphological Development Yasuko Shirasu Many guidebooks and booklists are available in Japan for those who are interested in or responsible for selecting good books for children of all ages. Recommended books are most commonly selected, taking the psychological development of the children into consideration. There is, however, a unique method of matching appropriate books to children based on their morphological development. In this study two booklists containing quality books for children between the ages of * and - years old are compared in detail. They were compiled by two different non-profit-making organizations offering specialist courses in children s books for adults. One of the main findings of the current study is that there exists a considerable difference in the choice of books between these two lists. Only +* per cent of the total number of books on the lists are the same. Three conclusions can be made about the booklist which was compiled in response to the morphological development of the children. It is more useful on the grounds : that it contains a larger proportion of newly-published books ; that it is based on the accurate content analysis of individual books ; and that the selected books are listed month by month corresponding to the growth of children.
