1 Saint Paul Parish The Catholic Community of Princeton LIVING BRANCHES The Gospel and second reading for this Fifth Sunday of Easter emphasize the need for us to remain in Christ, and he in us. This shared life finds expression in the image of the one vine and many branches. We become living branches of the vine, members of the Body of Christ through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation, sacraments of sharing God's own life. The First Letter of John describes the fruit of this vine as active love of neighbor: "And his commandment is this: we should believe... and love one another" (1 John 3:23). Our first reading from Acts shows us an example of someone who shares in Christ's life in the person of Saint Paul. Paul's fearless witness, even at the risk of his life, is proof to everyone that the risen Lord's Spirit truly fills him with life and is bearing fruit in him. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Joe As we gather today in Christ s name, we can reflect on the fact that ours is but one of many, many communi es throughout the world that are gathering today in the same way. Indeed, Christ is the true vine and there are many branches. As we con nue today, perhaps our prayer can be that each of the branches grow stronger on the vine, and that all might grow closer together as we share Christ s mission on this earth to share the Good News and witness of the resurrec on. The Nigh ngale and the Rose by Oscar Wilde is based on the need for a student to get a red rose in the middle of winter for his beloved. It narrates how the only way for the nigh ngale to get the red rose is to nourish the rosebush with her own blood. The gospel this weekend presents the image of the vine in a quite similar ar s c style. As a logical statement, the vine should yield grapes. However, speaking of Israel as a vine, the prophet Isaiah sung, I sing for my friend, my confrere s song for his vineyard. My friend he had a vineyard high up on a fer le slope. He dug it, cleared it of stones and planted it with merlot; he built a tower inside it, hewed out a wine vat within. He waited for grapes to come, they came sour. Through this poe c parable, the accusa on was clear: God has constantly loved his people, and the people have not produced fruit. There was a season of winter during the Second Temple Judaism period. There was an expectancy of spring, and a hope for a change. And in the midst of these sterile mes, our Lord comes proclaiming: I am the true vine; my Father is the vine grower [And] you are the branches. This was a climate altera on. The level of nurturing the vine has gone beyond the effort of gardener. Through the richness of God s Word, we are calmed, refreshed, and strengthened. Pastoral Council Meeting Our parish s Pastoral Council will meet on Wednesday, May 2 at 7:00 pm in the Parish House Conference Room. Our council will discuss our parish s pastoral plan. Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration is each Friday following the 8:15 am Mass until 5:00 pm in the church chapel. Monthly 24 Hour Extended Adoration on the first Thursday into first Friday from 9:00 am to 8:00 am in the Parish Center, Mercy Chapel. Please consider spending some time before the Eucharistic presence of the Lord by signing up for a period of time. The sign up sheets are located in the vestibule. The church is open daily until 9:00 pm for private prayer. Adult Catholic Singles Are you single (in the broadest sense) and would you like to get to know others in and around the parish? Are you new to the area and would like to meet up with Catholics around town? Are you planning Page 2 on joining some parish or diocesan event, but don t want to go by yourself? Have you aged out of the Young Adults group, but would like to con nue similar ac vi es? This new ministry is for you: we plan on mee ng monthly and quite informally with an list for events. Loaves & Fishes Hold the Date: June 23, 2018 Our parish s Loaves & Fishes ministry will again serve more than 600 meals on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Trenton, NJ, to the homeless and poor of the Trenton area. Help is needed both on Saturday at the Cathedral to prep, cook, serve, and clean up, and also on Friday, June 22, in the St. Paul school cafeteria, to help make cheese sandwiches, package toiletries, and load cars for transport to the Cathedral. 4 Parish Staff, Ministries and Organizations Altar & Rosary Society The ladies of our Altar & Rosary commit to praying the Rosary to Our Lady for our parish community and inten ons. They gather monthly for prayer and mee ng and assist in the care and cleaning of our parish church. In addi on this ministry organizes support groups twice a year for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. Every year as we join the children of our parish in receiving their First Eucharist; I ve found myself reflec ng on this very ques on, and every me I find myself thinking up a new answer. One year I had decided that it was because bread and wine are prominent in the celebra on of the Passover, and Jesus as an observant Jew would celebrate Passover as his Last Supper. Another year I had decided that it was because bread and wine are available to so many cultures, these are pre y universal foods, and if Jesus made such a stark claim as unless you eat my flesh, and drink my blood, you will not have life within you he would make sure that the items needed were readily available to all. While I haven t abandoned these reasons, my reflec on has borne new fruit. What does it take to make bread? It takes a lot of work from various individuals. Someone has to grow the grain, another mills it to flour, and s ll another bakes it. How about wine? You have grape growers, pickers, stompers, and s ll others ferment the wine and age it. Between the blessings of a good harvest, beneficial condi ons, and the labor of a community we are presented with the food that we need to sustain us. It is the communal nature of these items that Jesus has selected to be transformed into his body and blood, that make them the perfect meal to share in remembrance of him. We find this in one of the prayers from the Liturgy of the Eucharist when the priest says, Blessed are you, Lord God of all crea on, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. This week let s pray for the children of our parish who are celebra ng the gi of Christ s body and blood for the first me and for our en re community as we seek to set an example of faith for our younger brothers and sisters. As we wish all a safe end of the school year and a relaxing summer, now is a good me to register for next year. One less thing to Family Catechists Gathering Our next gathering for Family Home Study and Summer Academy par cipants will be on Sunday, May 5.
