1 Fall 2008 What you Need to Know About E. Coli Food is supposed to make us feel good--not make us sick. But sometimes bacteria and other germs can get into food. This turns a source of nutrients into a source of illness--or even death. One type of bacteria that causes many people to get sick in the United States is E. coli 0157:H7, often just called E. coli. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says at least 73,000 people in this country get E. coli each year and more than 60 people die from it. How do you get it? The most common way to get E. coli is by eating ground beef that has the bacteria and has not been cooked well. People have also become ill from eating bean sprouts or fresh leafy vegetables that have the bacteria, such as lettuce and spinach. Other ways you might get it include: Drinking milk, apple juice or apple cider that is not pasteurized. 2 What you Need to Know About E. Coli continued Having direct contact with a family member who has E. coli. Having direct contact with an infected child in a child care center. What are symptoms? The first sign that you might have E. coli is severe cramps in your abdomen that come on fast. The cramps are typically followed by watery, and then bloody, diarrhea. You may also have a mild fever, nausea or vomiting. You should see your doctor as soon as possible if you have bloody diarrhea. The only way to know if you have an E. coli infection is with a stool culture. How is it treated? Most people who have E. coli get better within five to 10 days without any special treatment. You should avoid taking medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor tells you to, reports the AAFP. The medicine will keep you from getting rid of the bacteria. The most common problem of an E. coli infection is hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This is lifethreatening and is usually treated in a hospital. Blood transfusions and kidney dialysis are often required. Children, in particular, are prone to getting HUS. It is the leading cause of acute kidney failure in American children. How can you prevent it? To help prevent getting E. coli, experts advise that you: Cook all ground beef well. That means the meat should be cooked until a thermometer says it has reached at least 160 degrees. And the meat is no longer pink in color. Don't eat ground beef that has not been cooked well. This includes hamburgers. If you're served a hamburger or other ground beef product that has not been cooked well, send it back for further cooking. Avoid milk, juice and cider that is not pasteurized. Keep your kitchen safe. Separate raw meat from other foods. Wash your hands, counters and utensils with hot soapy water after they touch raw meat. Never place cooked hamburgers or ground beef on the unwashed plate that held raw food. Wash all fruits and vegetables under running water just before eating, cutting or cooking. Remove the outer leaves of leafy vegetables. Scrub firm produce, such as melons and cucumbers, with a clean produce brush. It is not recommended that you wash fruits and vegetables with soap. Don t swallow lake or pool water when you swim. Wash your hands very well after going to the bathroom or changing diapers. To learn more about E. coli, go to

4 Get Ready for Robots! Robots doing surgery sounds like something Dr. Bones McCoy might do on the Starship Enterprise. But, really, it is done in more and more hospitals here on earth, right now. It doesn't mean R2D2 is operating on patients. Human doctors are still in charge. But they are using robots as tools. Maybe you've heard about surgeries that are not so invasive. This means surgeons use the latest tools to keep cuts small. These surgeries are better for the body. People who have them tend to heal quicker. They spend less time in the hospital and go home faster. With robots these surgeries are even easier. Millions of surgeries are done each year using endoscopy. This means instead of doing large cuts to the area being treated, the surgeon makes small cuts. These are used to insert long, narrow surgical tools and a tiny video camera into the body. The camera shows a picture of the surgical site on a video screen. The doctor looks at this screen while doing the surgery. Robot surgery uses small tools and a camera in much the same way. Rather than the surgeon holding the tools, they're held by robot arms. The robot uses the tools to cut and sew just as a human doctor would, but with better care. Instead of being at the operating table, the doctor controls the robot system from a station a few feet away. The robot arms, tools and camera are handled by a computer. Doctors can also control the robot with their voice. This hands-off approach is good for: A better view. Cameras used in normal surgery provide pictures in two dimensions. Robot systems provide 3-D images that can be made many times larger. A steadier grip. Doctors have steady hands. But their fine motor control over tools is even steadier when they use robots. This is great when operating in small, tight areas. A smaller size. Robot-held tools are smaller than the already small instruments used in normal surgery. This is good when doing surgery on children. A quicker recovery. Robot surgery reduces pain and trauma to the body. This allows people to get better quicker and heal faster. This is very true in heart surgery because robots allow doctors to operate without opening up the chest. People who had heart valves fixed with robot surgery went back to work about 50 percent faster than those who had regular surgery. Doctors will come up with many new ways to use robots. Future robots will be better than what machines these days offer. Dr. McCoy doesn't seem so far away!
