2 Proposed Mastitis Treatment Protocols for Grade 1 or Grade 2 Mastitis (Please consult with your herd veterinarian for exact treatment recommendations) Take milk sample for culture and plate Read at 18 to 24 hours NO GROWTH Cow self cured (occasionally: Myco plasma or Staph aureus but not shedding). GROWTH ON GRAM- POSITIVE SIDE Streptococcus species, coagulase-negative Straphylococci (environmental staphs), Staphylococcus aureus, other strep-like species. GROWTH ON GRAM- NEGATIVE SIDE E. coli, klebsiella or other Gram-negative. No treatment. Withhold milk from bulk tank until milk is clinically normal. Short-duration therapy (except if chronic case, long term high SCC or Staph aureus). Withhold milk until clinically normal and drug residue period is over. No treatment. Withhold milk until clinically normal. (Exception: Grade 3 mastitis should be treated immediately on diagnosis.)
