Diego is credited as the founder of Monterrey Mexico. Ines had one child named Maria Ines Rodriguez. Maria Ines Rodriguez who married Baltasar Sosa had three children, a girl named Maria Rodriguez and three boys. At each of these generations the daughter inherited her mother s surname and her mitochondrial DNA (mtdna), mtdna that in all likelihood had remained unchanged for a long time. Their mtdna is labeled haplogroup K. Haplogroup K came into existence about 15,000 years ago somewhere in Europe. At the time Ines Rodriguez came to Mexico, Europeans belonged to any of seven haplogroups U, X, H, V, T, J and K. The indigenous people of the New World consisted of the haplogroups A, B, C and D. Africans and their haplogroups L1, L2 and L3 came to Mexico with the Spaniards. Apart from Ines Rodriguez being European how do we know that she is in haplogroup K? Some of her descendants should have the same mtdna as she does. I trace my ancestry back to her. She is my 11 th great grandmother. My genealogy database has over 66,000 of her descendants. The same database has 401 descendants of Diego s second wife Maria Esquivel and over 30,000 for Juana Porcallo Cerda his third wife. Maria Esquivel did not have any daughters so her son was her only descendant to have her mtdna. Juana Porcallo Cerda s mtdna was passed on for two generations before also ending with male descendants. I descend from Ines 48 ways but testing my mtdna will not answer any questions about hers. My maternal lineage line only extends six generations. Testing someone with a maternal lineage that extends to Ines would give us our answer. My database has 3,206 women whose lineage does exactly that. One of them is Rosalinda Cantu. She ed me some time last year asking for assistance with her family history research. She sent me a series of reports of her ancestry. I used those report to link her to my records and was able to help her some. It was late November while working on her mother s side of the family that I

2 discovered that her maternal lineage extends to Ines Rodriguez. Long story short, I ed her begging that she get mtdna tested and she agreed. Testing with Family Tree DNA took about two months. Rosalinda had both low resolution and high resolution testing. She matched test results with 50 other people tested at Family Tree DNA at the low-resolution test level. Those fifty people would have had the same mother some 1,300 years ago. Like Rosalinda, some of those 50 matching people also where tested at the high-resolution level and of those 14 matched her results. Those 14 people would have had the same mother some 700 years ago. Testing has linked Rosalinda back to prehistoric time. It has done more than that. We know from her test results how her mother would test and her mother and so on and so on and we know that the children of any of those mothers would have the same test results and the children of any of the daughters too. I can predict that the 3,206 women in my database whose maternal lineage extends to Ines all share the same mtdna at the high-resolution test level. I have prepared a maternal lineage tree to demonstrate now Rosalinda links to Ines and a report giving the evidence for that tree.
