Rector?s Column TEARS AND CANDLES A few years ago, a young father gri evi ng over the tragi c death of hi s ei ght-year-old son sai d to m e,?we w on?t let our tears exti ngui sh the candles that li ght the w ay to heaven.? Chri stm as can be descri bed as a ti m e of tears and candles. We celebrate the bi rth of Jesus w ho li ghts the w ay to heaven because of hi s death and resurrecti on. The tears caused by si n can one day be dri ed for good because hi s resurrecti on destroyed the pow er of si n and physi cal death. Death i s defeated. Li fe w i ns! We m ake our w ay through the tears caused by li fe?s pai nful events by relyi ng on the li ght of Jesus?presence w hi ch i s alw ays w i th us. What are the tears and candles w e bri ng to Chri stm as thi s year? We bri ng the tears of shock, anger, confusi on and gri ef i n the afterm ath of the shooti ngs i n Las Vegas and other acts of terror throughout the w orld. We shed the tears of helplessness and sorrow over the hum an sufferi ng caused by recent hurri canes, fi res and earthquakes. There are tears for those w ho li ve i n poverty, w ho are w i thout food or w ho have no hom es. Our personal li ves contai n tears of gri ef for loved ones w ho have di ed or relati onshi ps that are no m ore. We cry as w e face seri ous i llness, a fam i ly cri si s or destructi ve acti ons that have caused harm. There are candles, too. The candles of our fai th i n Jesus w hi ch li ghts our w ay through each day. The candles of the people w ho love us and have gi ven of them selves for us. The candles of brave fi rst responders and countless anonym ous rescuers w ho ri sk thei r ow n li ves to save people unk now n to them. The candles of our ow n courageous and generous acti ons. The candles of our resolve and prom i se to conti nue fi ndi ng w ays to be candles of hope i n the w orld. I carry w i thi n m e the profound w ords of that gri evi ng father. I i nvi te you, the w onderful people of Chri st Cathedral Pari sh, to do the sam e. Thi s Chri stm as, m ay our tears not exti ngui sh the candles that li ght the w ay to heaven. Navi dad puede ser defi ni da com o un ti em po de lágri m as y velas. Celebram os el naci m i ento de Jesús, que i lum i na el cam i no al ci elo por m edi o de su m uerte y resurrecci ón. Las lágri m as ocasi onadas por el pecado pueden un día ser secadas para si em pre porque su resurrecci ón destruyó el poder del pecado y la m uerte físi ca. La m uerte es derrotada. Gana la vi da! Hacem os nuestro cam i no a través de las lágri m as ocasi onadas por aconteci m i entos dolorosos de la vi da confi ando en la luz de la presenci a de Jesús que está si em pre con nosotros. Cuáles son las lágri m as y las velas que traem os este año a la Navi dad? Traem os las lágri m as de shock, i ra, confusi ón y dolor a raíz del ti roteo en Las Vegas y otros actos de terror en todo el m undo. Lloram os lágri m as de i m potenci a y tri steza por el sufri m i ento ocasi onado por los reci entes huracanes, i ncendi os y terrem otos. Hay lágri m as de qui enes vi ven en la pobreza, que carecen de com i da o que no ti enen casas. Las velas de nuestra fe en Jesús, que i lum i nan nuestros cam i nos a través de cada día. Las velas de las personas que nos am an y han dado de sí m i sm os por nosotros. Las velas de los vali entes socorri stas e i nnum erables rescati stas anóni m os que arri esgan sus propi as vi das para salvar a gente desconoci da por ellos. Las velas de nuestras propi as acci ones vali entes y generosas. Las velas de nuestra voluntad y prom esa a conti nuar encontrando m aneras de ser velas de esperanza en el m undo. Llevo dentro de m í las palabras profundas de ese padre afli gi do. Los i nvi to, la gente m aravi llosa de la Parroqui a de la Catedral de Cri sto, en hacer lo m i sm o.
