She finished her Ph.D. program at the University of Freiburg in 1990 by submitting a thesis about the rebellion of the Tzeltales in the 18th century in Chiapas, Mexico, with the title: Der Aufstand der Tzeltal 1712-13. Analyse einer Revitalisationsbewegung im kolonialen Mesoamerika (Lit Verlag, 1991). Konrad was until his death in 1997 Professor of Anthropology and Latin American History at the University of Calgary, Canada. His chewing-gum tapper research was initiated in 1976 and was part of a long-term area investigation of ecological and ideological transformations in the tropical lowlands of Mexico. Konrad has written 80 publications and over 100 professional papers, the majority of them focusing on Mexico. In 1981, his book A Jesuit Hacienda in Colonial Mexico: Santa Lucia 1576-1767 earned him the Bolton Prize of the American Historical Association and was also published in Spanish. In 1996 he was awarded the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle by President Zedillo for his research and work promoting Mexican culture and history and for forging important networks between Canada and Mexico. Elena Lazos Chavero Realizó estudios de licenciatura (1979-83) en Biología en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, con la tesis intitulada Un estudio etnobotánico en Veracruz: Los solares, premiada por la Sociedad Botánica de México. Schwartz Received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968, based on research in Petén, Guatemala. Although he has done basic and applied research elsewhere in Central America and in Panama, he continues to return to Petén to observe the rapid changes occurring there. He is presently studying the social and economic causes of deforestation in Petén and the impact of development programs on small towns there. He was a consultant for the World Bank and NASA and since 1992 he is consulting with Conservation International s program in Petén.
