Presentación Introduction PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DE CHILE Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas 2 El Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas es una unidad académica líder en la innovación y difusión de la teoría y práctica de la gestión, que contribuye decisivamente a la formación del Ingeniero Civil e Ingeniero Civil de Industrias de la Pontificia Desde su creación en 1971, la docencia del Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas, tanto de pregrado como de postgrado, ha estado orientada a entregar una preparación del más alto nivel en el ámbito de la gestión, concentrándose en las áreas de investigación operacional, economía y dirección de empresas. El Ingeniero Civil de Industrias de la Universidad Católica integra en su currículo las materias de gestión ofrecidas por nuestro departamento con el conocimiento tecnológico especializado entregado por los departamentos de Ingeniería Mecánica, Química, Eléctrica, Hidráulica, Computación y Transporte; y los centros de Minería y Medio Ambiente. Este profesional está capacitado para desempeñarse exitosamente en empresas e instituciones, públicas y privadas. Esta formación simultánea en gestión y tecnología es un sello característico del Ingeniero Civil de Industrias de la Universidad Católica, que le permite tomar decisiones adecuadas y oportunas que derivan en un uso eficiente de los recursos. Su visión es amplia, siempre considera los aspectos tecnológicos, económicos, sociales y ambientales, en todas aquellas organizaciones que combinan recursos humanos y físicos. De este modo, el Departamento aporta en la formación de profesionales con el sello de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, que se caracteriza tanto por su competencia en las materias de su profesión, como por ser agentes de cambio y líderes en un mundo global, inspirados en los principios cristianos, motivados por su actividad laboral y dispuestos a vivir una dimensión moral al servicio de las personas y de la sociedad. El Departamento desarrolla su trabajo de investigación y extensión para ampliar la frontera del conocimiento y contribuir al desarrollo de herramientas y métodos utilizados en la toma de decisiones, en la formulación de políticas, en la configuración de estructuras organizacionales y en la solución de problemas operacionales. Sus principales áreas son: Gestión de Operaciones e Investigación Operacional; Economía y Finanzas; y Organización y Dirección de Empresas.

As an academic unit, the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department leads the innovation and dissemination of the management theory and practice that decisively contributes to the training of Civil Engineers and Civil Industrial Engineers at Pontificia Since its creation in 1971, the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department has been oriented to provide superior training in management, at both Undergraduate and Graduate levels, concentrating in the areas of operations research, economics and business administration. Universidad Católica s Civil Industrial Engineers include in their curricula all the management subjects offered by our Department, while specialized technological knowledge is provided by the Engineering Departments of Mechanics, Chemistry, Electronics, Hydraulics, Computing and Transportation, as well as the Mining and Environment Centres. These professionals have the expertise to successfully perform their activities in public and private companies and institutions. The simultaneous training in management and technology is the seal that symbolizes the Civil Industrial Engineer from Universidad Católica. It allows them to make appropriate and timely decisions oriented towards an efficient use of resources. Their perspective is broad; they always take into account the technological, economic, social and environmental issues in all organizations that combine human and capital resources. In this way, the Department contributes to the formation of professionals that have the seal of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile imprinted on them. The professionals formed by our Department are recognized for their competence in the matters of their profession and for being leaders and agents of change inspired by Christian principles, motivated by their work and eager to live for the service of people and society. The Department develops its research and outreach work to extend the frontier of knowledge and to contribute to the development of tools and methods used in decision-making, policy-making, the design of organizational structures and solving operational problems. Programas académicos Academic Programs PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DE CHILE Industrial and Systems Engineering 4 El Departamento imparte docencia de pre y postgrado. En pregrado, complementa la formación científicotecnológica de los Ingenieros Civiles Industriales de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, con una formación en investigación operacional, economía y gestión, entregando docencia a cerca de 3.000 alumnos cada semestre. En docencia de postgrado, el Departamento ofrece los programas de Magíster y Doctorado en Ciencias de la Ingeniería, con menciones en Gestión y Economía; e Investigación y Gestión de Operaciones, y el programa de Magíster en Ingeniería. Por otro lado, el Departamento ofrece el Master en Ingeniería Industrial, orientado a profesionales del área que deseen obtener un máster de negocios. Los programas de Magíster y Doctorado en Ciencias de la Ingeniería poseen una clara orientación científica, incluyendo tanto cursos de postgrado como una tesis. El Doctorado en Ciencias de la Ingeniería es un grado académico que capacita a los alumnos para realizar investigación en forma original e independiente. Su tesis corresponde al desarrollo de una investigación avanzada o de punta en un tema específico de Ingeniería Industrial. El Magíster en Ciencias de la Ingeniería constituye el estudio avanzado de una disciplina de Ingeniería Industrial, donde la tesis constituye una actividad formativa en un área específica de la ingeniería. Por otro lado, el Magíster en Ingeniería es una opción de especialización de postgrado con énfasis en la resolución de problemas complejos en la práctica de la Ingeniería. Este programa posee una mayor cantidad de cursos de postgrado que el Magíster en Ciencias y reemplaza la tesis por la realización de un proyecto ligado a alguna línea de desarrollo del Departamento, o bien, un internado en empresa. Finalmente, el Master en Ingeniería Industrial es un máster de negocios, que posee una clara orientación profesional, dirigida a ejecutivos de alto nivel y con experiencia profesional, que deseen actualizar sus conocimientos en un ambiente de alta exigencia intelectual. Se diferencia de un MBA al complementar la formación de habilidades gerenciales con un acento en las metodologías cuantitativas y su uso en la modelación de problemas de gestión en organizaciones complejas.

The Department offers Undergraduate and Graduate degrees. At the Undergraduate level, it supplements the scientific technological formation of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile s Civil Industrial Engineers, with a training in operations research, economics and management, teaching approximately 3.000 students each semester. At the Graduate level, in addition to the Engineering Master s Degree Program, the Department has the Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Engineering Sciences with majors in Management and Economics as well as in Operations Research & Management. On the other hand, the Department offers the Industrial Engineering Master s Degree oriented to professionals that intend to obtain a Business Master s Degree. The Engineering Sciences Master and Doctorate programs are clearly scientifically oriented, including both graduate courses and thesis. The Engineering Sciences Doctorate is an academic degree that trains its students to carry out research in an original and independent fashion. The thesis corresponds to the development of advanced or state-of-the-art research in a specific subject within the Industrial Engineering area. The Engineering Sciences Master s Degree becomes the advanced study of a discipline within Industrial Engineering, where the thesis becomes a development activity in a specific area of engineering. On the other hand, the Engineering Master s Degree is a graduate specialization option with special emphasis on the solution of complex problems in the practice of Engineering. This program has more graduate courses than the Master in Science program and substitutes the thesis by the execution of a project linked to any development line in the Department, or by an in-company Internship. Finally, the Industrial Engineering Master s Degree is a business Master s Degree created for high level executives with professional experience that wish to update their knowledge in an intelectually demanding environment. It is different from an MBA because it supplements the development of managerial skills with a special emphasis on quantitative methodologies and their use in the modelling of management problems in complex organizations. Investigación Research PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DE CHILE Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas 6 El Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas es líder en investigación de primer nivel en las áreas gestión de operaciones e investigación operacional; economía y finanzas; y organización y dirección de empresas, lo cual se ve reflejado en la gran cantidad de publicaciones internacionales, la participación de nuestros académicos en numerosos seminarios y congresos, tanto nacionales como internacionales, y en el nivel de las asesorías realizadas a organizaciones públicas y privadas. El Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas cuenta con diversas herramientas multimedia y software que le permiten desarrollar simulaciones de procesos y negocios, realizar completos y sofisticados análisis estadísticos, analizar información financiera de sociedades anónimas chilenas y acceder a bases de datos de publicaciones mundiales, entre otras funciones. También se puede acceder a la biblioteca, que posee colecciones completas y actualizadas de las últimas publicaciones referidas a investigación operacional, economía y administración de empresas. El Departamento no limita su quehacer al ámbito docente. Un objetivo importante es contribuir al desarrollo del país, no sólo a través de la formación de ingenieros de primer nivel, sino también por medio de la participación de sus académicos en la propuesta e implementación de soluciones modernas y eficaces en problemas de relevancia nacional. Es así como, desde sus inicios, el Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas realiza contribuciones significativas a un amplio espectro de empresas e instituciones. En los últimos años, el Departamento ha contribuido al diseño de políticas y solución de problemas para entidades del sector público y privado, a través del aporte de enfoques, herramientas y modelos de la más alta calidad. Entre ellos destacan, por ejemplo, los desarrollados para las áreas de salud, finanzas, energía, educación y medio ambiente.

The Industrial and Systems Engineering Department is a world-class research leader in Operations Management and Operations Research, Economics and Finances in addition to Business Organization and Administration Research. This is reflected by the large amount of international publications, the participation of our faculty in various domestic and international seminars and congresses and by the level of consultancy carried out with public and private organizations. The Industrial and Systems Engineering Department has various multimedia and software tools that allow simulations of processes and businesses, complex and sophisticated statistical analyses, analysis of Chilean Corporations financial information and access to world publications databases, among other activities. It is also possible to access the Library which has full and updated collections of the latest publications on operations research, economics and business administration. An important objective of the Department is to contribute to the development of the country, not only through the formation of excelling engineers but also through the involvement of its faculty in the design and implementation of modern and efficient solutions for nationally relevant issues. That is how, since its origin, the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department continues to make significant contributions to a broad range of companies and institutions. During these last years, the Department has played a role in the policy-making and problem-solving for public and private organizations, contributing with the highest quality approaches, tools and models in areas such as Health, Finance, Energy, Education and Environment. Extensión Outreach PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA DE CHILE Industrial and Systems Engineering 8 Seminarios y cursos Entre las distintas actividades de extensión que desarrolla el Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas, destacan diversos seminarios y cursos para ejecutivos en las distintas áreas de desarrollo e investigación del Departamento, como por ejemplo: contabilidad, economía del medio ambiente, estrategia, evaluación estratégica de proyectos, finanzas, gestión de operaciones, marketing y regulación. Permanentemente imparte diplomados y cursos diseñados según los requerimientos de organizaciones públicas y empresas del sector privado. Éstos permiten acercar la investigación de punta con el mundo empresarial, otorgando herramientas y tecnologías adecuadas a las necesidades actuales de cada entidad. Es importante recalcar el fuerte vínculo con el mundo profesional generado por el Master en Ingeniería Industrial, orientado a ejecutivos de alto nivel en organizaciones públicas y privadas. Este programa de postgrado permite poner a disposición de las organizaciones los últimos desarrollos en temas avanzados de gestión. Clase ejecutiva, fundada en 1998 por el Departamento de Ingeniería Industrial y de Sistemas en conjunto con la empresa El Mercurio, ofrece un programa de perfeccionamiento en administración de negocios, que combina clases publicadas en prensa escrita, participación a través de Internet y clases presenciales opcionales. Asesorías En un permanente contacto con el mundo empresarial y el sector público, nuestro departamento realiza asesorías especializadas a empresas públicas y privadas a través de investigaciones de alto nivel. Estas actividades se realizan en torno a los temas relacionados con gestión operacional, economía y administración de empresas, en sub-áreas como contabilidad gerencial, finanzas, marketing, estrategia, economía industrial, control de gestión, gestión ambiental, regulación, planificación, gestión estratégica, gestión de producción y operaciones, sistemas de apoyo a la gestión y gestión de sistemas públicos. Algunos ejemplos de la transferencia científica tecnológica que realiza el Departamento son: FINlab UC (Laboratorio de Investigación Avanzada en Finanzas), que realiza investigación científica acerca del mercado financiero nacional y de temas en finanzas de interés para el país, privilegiando un enfoque cuantitativo y potenciando su impacto mediante desarrollos tecnológicos y una amplia difusión de sus resultados; Pricing UC (Revenue Management), que mediante el uso de técnicas cuantitativas, modela el comportamiento de los consumidores apoyando a las empresas en la fijación de políticas óptimas de precios; y SHIFT UC (Workforce Management), que utiliza herramientas cuantitativas para lograr una mejor gestión de recursos humanos en las empresas, definiendo dotaciones óptimas y armando turnos de trabajo.

Seminars and Courses Among the activities carried out by the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department are seminars and courses for executives in the various areas of research of the Department. Some of them are the following: Accounting, Environment Economics, Strategy, Project Strategic Assessment, Finances, Operations Management, Marketing and Regulations. On an ongoing basis, the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department teaches diploma degrees and courses designed based on the requirements of public organizations and private companies. They bring together state-of-the-art research with the business world, providing adequate tools and technologies designed for the current needs of each institution. It s important to underline that there is a strong bond with the professional world created by the industrial Engineering Master s Degree, oriented to highlevel executives in public and private organizations. This graduate program provides to the organizations the latest developments in advanced management issues. Clase ejecutiva, founded in 1998 by the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department jointly with El Mercurio newspaper, offers a business administration program that combines printed press classes with Internet classes and optional inclassroom classes. Consultancy In permanent contact with the business world and public sector, our Department carries out specialized consultancy for public and private companies through high-level research. These activities are carried out on the subjects related to Operational Management, Economics and Business Administration and in sub areas such as Management Accounting, Finances, Marketing, Strategy, Industrial Economics, Management Control, Environmental Management, Regulations, Planning, Strategic Management, Production and Operations Management, Management Support Systems and Public Systems Management. Examples of the science and technology transfer made by the Department are: FINlab UC (Laboratory of Advanced Research in Finance) which carries out high-level scientific research of the domestic financial market and financial issues of interest for the country, enabling a quantitative approach and enhancing its impact through technological developments and with a broad dissemination of its outcomes; Pricing UC (Revenue Management), that by the use of quantitative techniques, models customer behavior supporting companies with optimal pricing policies; and SHIFT UC (Workforce Management) uses quantitative tools to help companies with a better human resource management, defining optimal workforce and shifts.
