GENERADOR DE FLUJO RADIAL DE IMANES PERMANENTES Autor: Zahonero Carrasco, Paloma.
RADIAL FLOW PERMANENT MAGNET GENERATOR This project object is to design and analyze a radial flow permanent magnet synchronous generator. This generator is oriented to offshore wind farms, for a 5 MW wind turbine power. Wind turbines have taken another step in their growth compared to other renewable energy to discover the great advantages of placing wind farms in the seas and oceans. These new sites allow have huge tracts and resolve the problem of visual impact. However, the biggest advantage is the speed of the wind; as it places in maritime areas, where the roughness is zero, it is much bigger and you can get higher power. Offshore wind turbines, as the much bigger wind speed, the power generated will be also. On the contrary, it can cause problems in terms of effort, and the gearbox will be the mechanical element that more may be affected. To avoid having to make constant maintenance for fixing, in which the wind turbine wouldn t be used, the project proposes the direct drive wind turbine-electric generator. Consequently, the generator will operate at low speed, variable, and with a big torque, causing that the machine had a high diameter and large number of poles. In this particular case, the generator will have a capacity of 5 MW and a speed of 10 rpm. These kind of direct drive connection synchronous generators are already on the market, but they are not common because it is still not known its efficiency in front of others. So this project also will study the feasibility of using this product. First, it is realized a study of various possible generators to use in the market, opting for permanent magnet synchronous generator due to its advantages: The induction generator has some high losses in the windings, which makes the final performance of the machine is low. Synchronous generator with wound rotor generators are not suitable for multiple poles because, by decreasing the pole pitch increases the size of the teeth, and this affects the final cost of the machine is low. - 5 -
Subsequently, it is realized a search of the generators of this type found in the market to get an initial idea of how it was. Also it is decided to make the machine to induce intensity at a frequency different from the electrical network: 30 Hz. As in the case of these machines in which the input speed is variable, we will have to use a converter to the output, it is not important to reduce the frequency. With this reduction, it will have less number of poles. So, the project is started with the sizing of the generator to design. To do so, it is taken into account: The circulation of magnetic flux generated by the magnets in the stator, which will induce tension in their coils. To model this flow, the magnetic circuit is made. The rotor, consisting of a steel yoke and magnets. In this aspect, it is realized a permanent magnet of rare earth Nd-Fe-B. In addition, it is determined the use of magnets oblique to reduce the number of harmonics. The stator. It must be determined the slot where it will stay the winding, the winding configuration, the isolation and the number of turns necessary to obtain the nominal tension at 690 V. Once the machine is designed, we proceeded to draw it in Catia program, which lets you create 3D models after to have plans after. Figure 1 shows a detail obtained from the model created in Catia for the generator. - 6 -
Figure 1 Detail of the machine In the next table you can also see some important parameters obtained after the design. Potencia Velocidad Par Diámetro Longitud 5 MW 10 rpm 4774 kn m 7 m 1.3 m Nº pares de polos 180 Tensión Corriente 690 V 4183,7 A Following this, it is realized calculations to achieve tangible results of this design: First, it is realized the electric circuit of the machine. It has gained a very important conclusion: the machine is not ready to generate rated voltage at rated current, and if it is forced to do so, the machine will consume reactive power. This is the biggest problem of these generators, however, - 7 -
it was an expected failure, since it has made an initial design, and it should be improved in future optimizations. Secondly, we have calculated the losses of the generator produced on copper and iron to subsequently calculate the final performance of the machine. The result has been positive on this occasion: 95.4 % performance. Finally, we studied the possible demagnetization of the generator. The result has been favorable given the small short circuit, but this possibility is very dangerous in these machines excited by permanent magnet. To observe the feasibility of this project, it is realized an economic study which has determined that the final cost of the machine is 1,398,793.68 and the project is viable. In conclusion, we can say that the first result is not quite good, although further optimizations are able to get a generator with no problems regarding the reactive consumption. The performance obtained suggests that it is on the right track. While the cost of the machine is substantial and can t be cost effective, it should consider the advantages of not having multiple poles to eventually determine the feasibility of using this generator over others. - 8 -
