2 Microsoft Windows is an operating system with graphical interface for personal computers, owned by Microsoft. This is an space where you can access everything you need to operate your computer, such as system components, applications, the Internet, etc. The desktop contains: Start button: one of the most important tools you will use while working with Windows XP. The Start button allows you to open menus and start applications. Taskbar: primarily used to switch between open windows and applications. Learn more about using the Taskbar in a later lesson. Icons (or graphical pictures): represent applications, files, folders and other parts of the operating system. It allows you to open an application quickly. Icons Background Start button Task bar Notification area Quick Launch area Taskbar The taskbar is the small blue bar you see at the bottom of your desktop. It contains the Start menu and the Quick Launch bar, which contains icons for Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, and so on. 2

3 ICONS The small pictures on the desktop are called icons. One type of icon is an object icon. Examples of object icons are My Computer, Recycle Bin, and Internet Explorer. These icons allow you to open files and programs on your computer. FOLDERS Right click in the empty area of the display window, and click "New" then "Folder". NOTIFICATION AREA Here, you'll find the clock and several other icons depending on what you have installed on your computer. OPENING AN APPLICATION By clicking on the START button, going to the PROGRAMS menu and locating the application in the list that appears. A new folder will be created called "New Folder" change the name to something that makes sense for its intended use. Write the name " ", then click Enter 3

4 The Explorer is an indispensible tool in an operating system, since with it we can organize and control the files and folders of the different storage systems at our disposal such as the hard drive, disk drive, etc. Through it we can delete, see, copy, or move files and folders.
