4 Just to keep you updated. First and foremost, I am humbled and touched by the outpouring of well wishes, prayers and cards that I have received since I had my robotic laparoscopic surgery for a partial nephrectomy on January 9, The outcome of the surgery was extremely positive. The procedure lasted about five hours but I just remember going under anesthetic at 7:30 AM and waking up in my room around 4:30 PM. The surgeon removed fifteen percent of my left kidney and said that it looked very promising. On Wednesday, January 11, prior to when I was released, the final biopsy report showed it was a clear cell carcinoma and that the margins were clean and clear. The follow up treatment is another appointment with my Doctor in three months and then a CAT Scan and Chest X-Ray every six months for this first year. The cancer was contained and there were no traces anywhere else in my body so we will continue to monitor and follow through to make sure there are no signs in the future. It is the most positive outcome from a difficult situation. Recovery has been resting, reading and trying to walk and remain a bit active without overdoing it. I went to the bank and dinner last week and went home and took a two hour nap. I get tired easily but the Doctor said that this is mostly expected as my body slowly recuperates and heals from the surgery and the recovery. My pain has significantly diminished but there are some tinges of discomfort that linger, at times. I am limited on lifting for a few more weeks but I am on the mend. I will be returning to the Parish and slowly working back to a work schedule this coming Tuesday, January 31st. I will be in and out depending on my energy, but feel free to drop me an or call me as well. I am so humbled by the compassion and concern many in our community and parish have shown to me and please know I am looking forward to praying and celebrating with you next weekend. 5 Sólo para mantenerle actualizado... En primer lugar, me siento conmovido por la efusión de buenos deseos, oraciones y tarjetas que he recibido desde que tuve mi cirugía laparoscópica robótica para una nefrectomía parcial el 9 de enero del El resultado de la cirugía fue extremadamente positivo. El procedimiento duró alrededor de cinco horas, pero sólo recuerdo caer bajo la anestesia a las 7:30 AM y despertar en mi habitación alrededor de las 4:30 PM. El cirujano quitó quince por ciento de mi riñón izquierdo y dijo que parecía muy prometedor. 6 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, For over 50 years, the Collection for the Church in Latin America has been a sign of the solidarity of the Church in the United States with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. For people living in these regions, barriers to practicing the faith include lack of resources, shortages of pastoral agents, and poor infrastructures that make relatively simple things like participating in weekly Mass difficult. Your support of the collection helps to share the faith with those who long to experience God s mercy within strong faith communities. For example, in northern Peru, great distances and deteriorated roads mean that church agents must often travel by foot or mule to rural communities. As a result, some communities are visited by pastoral agents and ministers only once per month, others sometimes just twice per year. The Collection for the Church in Latin America was able to help fund training for 65 pastoral ministers for the communities in this region. Because of your support, these new leaders continue to reach out and serve the rural communities, ensuring that all feel included in our family of faith. Please be generous in this collection, and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support will truly make a difference. In fact, in a letter to Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz and the entire Catholic community in the United States, Pope Francis commended the work of the collection, saying, Through your support, many lives have been touched by the Good News of Christ s merciful love, especially for the poor.
