1 Parents As Reading Partners - PARP- Fall 2013 Dear Parents, Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) is a collaborative effort among parents, teachers, and community to build a reading partnership between the home and the school. PARP programs encourage parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes per day. Learning to read is the single most important activity in a child s education. Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in formal education. Life goes by so fast and children grow up very quickly. PARP is a unique opportunity to foster reading habits among the whole family AND to slow down to enjoy quality time together. On Wednesday, September 25 th, the Montauk School PARP program will kick off with our PARP Rally at 1:30pm in the Gym. PARP will run for three weeks from Wednesday, September 25 th through Wednesday, October 16 th, We hope that all students and parents who participated in this program in the past will take part in it again. We also hope that students and parents who have not participated in previous years will join in. All students in grades PreK-8 and their parents or caregivers are eligible. Let s make this the best PARP season yet! Basic Rules Spend 15 minutes per day, 5 days per week reading with your child for a total of 75 minutes for each week. You may read to your child, have your child read to you, or you may read quietly together. If you are not available to read, your child may read with a grandparent, brother, sister, or a friend. Students in grades 5-8 may read 60 of the required 75 minutes (i.e. 4 of the 5 days) on their own. A parent must verify that the student has read. If you miss a day, you can make it up the next day. Fill in the time sheet each day after reading. Put the number of minutes you read in the appropriate box. If you wish, write down what you read on the back. Sign, then scissor off the proper weekly portion from the time sheet, and have your child give it to his/her homeroom teacher on each of the Wednesdays during the PARP program. Your child s time sheet MUST be returned each Wednesday to ensure eligibility for the weekly awards. Students who complete all three weeks will receive a bonus reward. Please return the signed contract by Wednesday, September 25 th, Parents and children may borrow books from both the Montauk School Library and the Montauk Library. Happy PARPing!

Sera por 3 semanas, de miercoles 25 de septiembre a miércoles 16 de octubre. Esperamos que todos participen. Estudiantes de kindergarten al grado ocho pueden entrar. Reglas Pase 15 minutos x dia, 5 dias a la semana, leyendo con su hijo. Usted puede leer o su hijo, tios, abuelos, o amigos pueden hacerlo tambien. Estudiantes en grados 5 a 8 pueden leer 60 de los 75 minutos (por ejemplo: 4 de los 5 dias) solo, si un padre dice que ellos leyeron. Si pierde un día, lo hace al día siguiente. Llene la hoja después que lea. Si quiere anote lo que leyo atras. Firme y corte la hoja que corresponde, darselo a su hijo para que se lo entregue a su maestro cada miércoles. La hoja de tiempo de lectura tiene que ser devuelto todos los miércoles para ganarse un premio. Todos los estudiantes que completan tres semanas de el programa van a recibir una sorpresa. Van haber libros en Español en la biblioteca de la escuela y la biblioteca en el pueblo de Montauk. Feliz PARPiendo! El contrato debe ser devuelto a la escuela antes de el miércoles 25 de septiembre.
