1 24 September de 2007 Hotel Tourism Short-Term Trends (HOS/HPI/HII) August Overnight stays in hotel establishments increase 1.3% in August, as compared with the same month in 2006 The interannual rate of hotel prices increases 3.9% During the month of August, 38.1 million overnight stays were registered in hotel establishments, which implies an increase of 1.3% with regard to the same month in Overnight stays of residents decreased 0.3%, whereas those corresponding to non-residents increased 2.7%. The average stay decreased 2.2% as compared with August 2006, standing at 3.8 nights per guest. During the combined period of July and August, overnight stays increased 1.2% as compared with the same period of Resident stays grew 0.4% and non-resident stays grew 1.8%. Over the first eight months of the year, million overnight stays were registered, that is, 2.1% more than the same period in 2006, with increases of 2% for residents and 2.1% for non-residents. The average stay stood at 3.3 nights per guest, for a total of 1.3% less than the same period in On the other hand, the Hotel Price Index (HPI) registered an increase of 3.9% in the month of August, a rate one point higher than that recorded the same month in The Hotel Income Index (HII), which unlike the HPI, also considers the variation in the tariff structure, reflected a 4.7% interannual growth in income per occupied room. During the month of August, 74.2% of the available bedplaces were filled, which implies a decrease of 0.2% with respect to August The weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces stood at 77.1%, with an interannual decrease of 1.5%. 2 The occupancy rates expected for October and November increase The occupancy rates by room expected for the months of October and November registered interannual rates of 2.8% and 8.7%, respectively, with respect to the rates expected in August of last year for the same months. Overnight stays of British citizens decrease, while those of German citizens increase Guests from the United Kingdom and Germany registered almost 11.2 million overnight stays in August, accounting for 53.7% of the total for non-residents. The British market experienced an interannual decrease of 2.9% in its overnight stays, while the German market experienced a increase of 3.2%. The overnight stays of Italian, French and Dutch guests (the following markets) presented interannual rates of -0.2%, 12.5% and 2.5%. Within this community, overnight stays by guests, which represented 39.5% of the national total, increased 0.3% in comparison with August It was followed by Cataluña, with an interannual rate of 4.1%, and by Canarias, with a rate of -0.9%. Andalucía, Comunitat Valenciana and Cataluña were the main destinations for Spaniards, with interannual rates for overnight stays of 2.7%, 4.2% and -7.1%, respectively. 3 Illes Balears reaches the highest occupancy rate in the month of August Illes Balears was the Autonomous Community with the highest occupancy rate by bedplace during the month of August (89.4%). It was followed by Canarias (81.8%) and Comunitat Valenciana (78.2%). The tourist areas with the highest occupancy and overnight stay rates were located on the islands and the coasts. The part of the Costa de la Luz located in Huelva, Andalucía, accounted for the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (92.7%) and the Island of Menorca registered the highest weekend occupancy rate by bedplaces (92.5%). The Island of Mallorca was the area that registered the greatest number of overnight stays in August, with over seven million bedplaces occupied. The tourist sites with the highest number of overnight stays were Calviá, Benidorm and Barcelona. Formentera, in turn, had the highest occupancy rate by bedplaces (97.9%) and the highest weekend occupancy rate (98.6%). Hotel prices increase 3.9% in August The interannual increase of the HPI stood at 3.9% in August, which was 0.6 points above the rate from the prior month and one point higher than the increase recorded one year ago. Illes Balears, which carried the largest load in the weight structure this month (20.3%), showed an interannual rate of 5.6%, that is, 1.7 points higher than the rate registered one month prior, in July. Andalucía yielded a rate of 3.4%, that is 0.4 points higher than the rate registered in July Cataluña, however, experienced a price increase of 4.6%, 0.4 points lower than the previous month. Canarias reached a rate of 2.6%, 2.5 points higher than the rate registered the previous month. 3

4 One- and two-star hotels raise their prices the most The prices of five- and four-gold-star hotels increased in August, 5% and 2.7%, respectively, as compared with the same month of last year. Three-gold-star hotels registered an interannual rate of 4.3%. Hotels with one gold star increased the most (an interannual rate of 6.6%), followed by hotels with two gold stars (5.9%). The HII experiences an increase of 4.7% in the interannual rate in August The HII showed an interannual increase of 4.7% in August, 0.8 points higher than the rate registered in July and 1.4 points higher than the rate registered last year. The four Communities (Illes Balears, Cataluña, Andalucía, and Canarias), which account for 70.8% of the total weight of the income index per occupied room in the month of August, registered positive interannual rates (8.6%, 4.9%, 2.1% and 4%, respectively). Income per occupied room increased in all categories. The most moderate growth was recorded in four-gold-star and in one-silver-star establishments, with rates of 2.3% and 4%, respectively.
