3 1. Introduction My works are carried out during the period , initiated at the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity (University of Valencia, Spain), and based on the study and classification of ornamental and alien floras in Spain; the results have been used in my doctoral thesis entitled Certain Aspects of the Ornamental Flora of Valencia, supervised by Dr. Josep Antoni Rosselló Picornell, and also in the publication in scientific journals of numerous articles together with several monographs and the creation of the first volume, in 2006, of the Bouteloua scientific journal, a Spanish journal dedicated to the study of ornamental flora from a scientific perspective. The results of this line of work have increased our knowledge regarding the number of species and cultivars cultivated and/or commercialized in Spain, and also of the presence of these taxa in alien flora. In these works, we have discovered numerous cultivars that had not been mentioned in existing recent horticultural literature.

4 2. Some historical data

5 Numerous data is found regarding cultivated plant varieties in historical botanical works in Spain, for example, in the Muslim period numerous cultivars are mentioned in the medieval Book of Agriculture (Zacaria, 1802), or in the sixteenth century, by Herrera (1970), an ecclesiast and agronomist, in his Book of Agriculture, published for the first time in 1513.

6 We find images that represent cultivars in The Codex by Jaume Honorat Pomar, a book from the sixteenth century, that shows numerous exotic plant engravings from New World species as well as those from the Old World, where we can observe cultivars including the Tulipa L. genus. This work has recently been published for the first time (López, 2000).

8 We find works in the nineteenth century of a particular value from a horticultural point of view, such as the Treaty of the Flowers in which the method is explained to cultivate those that serve as adornment of the gardens, by Boutelou & Boutelou (1804), the Test on the Varieties of the Common Grapevine by Clemente (1807), or the Descriptive Botany Handbook by Cutanda & Amo (1848) that is the true gem for the current analysis and study of Spanish cultivated flora.

11 In the twentieth century, the book by Dantín (1920) must be emphasized as an example of significant compiled works on cultivated plants and varieties in Spain, along with the book by Pañella (1970) during the second half of the twentieth century, that present a list of plants and cultivars cultivated in this geographic area.

12 Currently, the Spanish ornamental Flora, José Manuel Sánchez et al. work, is the most important work of cataloguing of the Spanish ornamental flora ( ), with six published volumes. Along with these more general compiled works, Mr. José Manuel Sánchez has published numerous articles in technical magazines dedicated to the world of horticulture, concentrating on the study of genus, plant families or specific groups, along with numerous books and publications dedicated to the study of ornamental flora on a local level. These works have represented a significant point of reference for our studies.

14 3.1. Sources for the development of my work

15 Information has been taken from several sources for the development of my work: 1. Field work in several areas of the Spanish landscape. 2. Nursery catalogue compilations (Spanish and foreign nurseries that market their products in Spain). More than 1500 nursery catalogues have been selected that contain cultivars produced, marketed and registered for these companies, and if possible that contain descriptions of the Series to which the cultivars belong, and images of the cultivars. 3. Compilation of the information contained in catalogues of nurseries from the 19th and 20th centuries referred to varieties of plants grown and marketed in Spain 4. Visits to collections specialising in certain families, mostly of succulent plants.

18 The doctoral thesis, based on a compilation of articles published in several Spanish magazines, represents a first approach to the study of the Valencian ornamental flora. The objetives of this work: 1. Identify species naturalized and cultivated some genera belonging to the family Agavaceae, Aloaceae and Cactaceae. 2. Update the catalogue of alien species from the Valencian community. 3. To establish a first list of invasive or potentially invasive ornamental plants of the natural environment in the Valencian Community.

20 As I have indicated, during these years have been published, alone or in collaboration with other authors, numerous scientific articles that have been increasing the number of cultivars known in Spain, and that we can include into four groups: 1. The study of the alien flora of ornamental origin. 2. Data contributed by historical Spanish botanical works. 3. The study of the Spanish ornamental flora. 4. New species and cultivars.

22 From the point of view of the study of the alien flora of ornamental origin, and as a result of this line of inquiry, works have been published where cultivars belonging to different genera have been listed. Others are centred on the study of families, genera or species, for example, for the Cactaceae Agavaceae, Aizoaceae, Portulacaceae, Crassulaceae and Aloaceae families, or genera such as Ipomoea, Lavandula, Centranthus, Papaver, Robinia, Chlorophytum or Hedera.

50 A key project to study the Spanish ornamental plants was the creation, in 2006, of the journal Bouteloua ( which is dedicated to the study of ornamental plants, which have been published so far nineteen volumes, and has included numerous works devoted to issues related to cultivated plants, Spaniards historic gardens, field studies on ornamental flora, non-native and invasive ornamental flora of the natural environment etc. This is the first journal in Spain that publish iconography and information of varieties of plants cultivated/marketed in Spain. The Editorial Board of the journal is composed of doctors Daniel Guillot Ortiz, Gonzalo Mateo Sanz (University of Valencia) and Josep Antoni Rosselló Picornell (University of Valencia), being responsible for the website Dr. José Luis Benito (Jolube Consulting Environmental. Jaca, Huesca).

65 During the development of a research project carried out in the period by the Foundation Oroiberico (Noguera de Albarracín, Teruel, Spain), consisting of the creation of a database of cultivated plant varieties in Spain, and financed by the Spanish Government, via the Biodiversity Foundation and the Trust Fund of Teruel of 2010, Asiader (Government of Aragon, Spain), and the Foundation Oroiberico, entitled Herbarium and database of horticultural varieties, the presence of 2,124 cultivars cultivated and/or commercialized in this country were confirmed. This project also included the creation of the first herbarium in Spain dedicated exclusively to cultivars.
