As you will see from photos, conference programs, and the summaries of papers presented at our international congresses in Austin (LAJSA) and in Jerusalem (AMILAT), the publications, presentations and awards LAJSA members have kept actively participating in national and international conferences. We now look forward to receiving abstracts for the LAJSA Regional Conference that will take place on May 1 and 2, 2014, in New York City, 1

2 coordinated by Nora Glickman and Ronnie Perelis. For stories and pictures from this conference go to: /6777 Preparations for the XVII International Research Conference have already started and a call for proposals for a venue should be out soon. Within a few weeks you will receive the call for papers for the NYC 2014 Regional Conference co- organized by our colleagues, Nora Glickman and Ronnie Perelis. It will be in the Northern Hemisphere Spring of 2014; the exact dates will be announced when they have been established. LAJSA's secretary, Margalit Bejarano, and Board member, Amalia Ran, will oversee forthcoming elections, as both of us will step down by spring, 2014 and new authorities will step in. We hope that all members take part in these elections. Dear LAJSA Friends, As we begin a new season, we would like to update you about recent developments and new initiatives in our association. In June 2013, we held the XVI International Research Conference of LAJSA, co- sponsored by the Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies, at the University of Texas at Austin. Well organized and with a rich program, it brought together researchers from different countries,disciplines and generations. We were particularly impressed by the strong presence s, young scholars who are about to complete their dissertations or have recently done so. Such presence serves as an Our publication, Latin American Jewish Studies, is going from strength to strength. We would like to thank Nora Glickman and Ariana Huberman for their excellent job. The importance of the bulletin as a resource in our expanding field is evidenced by our new arrangement with EBSCOhost databases. Under the leadership of LAJSA- list and Website Manager Naomi Lindstrom, our website is becoming richer in information. Becas / Scholarships The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is pleased to present the Fred and Ellen Lewis JDC Archives Fellowship, for which applications for Latinamericanist projects using the JDC archives are welcome. One or two fellowships will be awarded each year to deserving scholars engaged in graduate level, post- doctoral, or independent study to conduct research in the JDC Archives, either in New York or Jerusalem. Eric Hobsbawm, em Era dos extremos, afirma que o Holocausto (a Shoah) é fruto de uma xenofobia de raça, principalmente aos facilidade tudo o que havia de mais odioso num mundo injusto, inclusive seu compromisso com as ideias do Iluminismo e da Revolução Francesa que os tinham emancipado e, ao fazê- lo, os críticos, propomos um espaço de reflexão sobre esses dois fenômenos históricos e sua inscrição na literatura, notadamente marcada pela intolerância e pela perseguição explicita à comunidade judaica. Se no período colonial, os cristãos- novos ou os criptojudeus eram torturados pelo Santo Ofício, durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, foram massacrados pelo Estado fascista. Inquisição e Holocausto são, portanto, dois momentos históricos que simbolizam o espaço do conflito e do ódio. Muitos poetas, cronistas e romancistas brasileiros, tanto escritores judeus brasileiros como não judeus não ficaram indiferentes a esses dois fenômenos. De Machado de Assis a Dias Gomes, de Castro Alves a Vinícius de Moraes, de Samuel Rawet a Moacyr Scliar, passando por Carlos Drummond de Andrade e Jorge Amado, vários artistas da palavra denunciaram ora de forma explícita ora por meio de metáforas e símbolos tanto a dor como a morte e as consequências funestas da Inquisição e do Holocausto na vida brasileira. We welcome proposals from scholars in all relevant academic disciplines, including history, political science, literature, Jewish studies, philosophy, religion, sociology, anthropology, comparative genocide studies, law, and others. The Center awards fellowships- in- residence to candidates working on their dissertations (ABD), postdoctoral researchers, and senior scholars. 29

30 Because a principle focus of the program is to ensure the development of a new generation of Holocaust scholars, we especially encourage scholars early in their careers to apply. Applicants must be affiliated with an academic and/or research institution when applying for a fellowship. We will also consider immediate post- docs and faculty between appointments. The specific fellowship and the length of the awards generally range up to nine consecutive months of residency; a minimum of three consecutive months is required and no exceptions are allowed. Fellowships of five months or longer have proven most effective. Stipends range up to $3,500 per month for the purpose of defraying local housing and other miscellaneous living expenses. Residents of the Washington, DC metropolitan area receive a reduced stipend of $1,750 per month. Awards include a stipend to offset the cost of direct travel to and from Washington, DC.
