3 2 nd SUNDAY OF LENT "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When they heard this divine declaration, Peter, James, and John fell on the ground, trembling in fear. The gleaming vision of Jesus miraculously transfigured before them, and the appearance of the two prophets who had been dead for ages, didn't knock them over. Rather, the clear voice of God that followed this apparition struck fear into their hearts. The first part of the heavenly announcement certainly confirmed what they had just seen-the unveiled glory of Jesus' divinity. But these words included another element, a command from on high: "Listen to him." Perhaps part of the fear that shook these men was the solemn realization that Christ's divinity demands more than our respect. It demands our response. Knowing that Jesus is God is only part one. We are also called to follow him, by heeding his teachings and imitating his example. Lent is a special time to examine just how well we are "listening" to Christ. It is a season to uncover the areas where we are deaf to his word, or at least where we are pretending not to hear it. To this end, we have the Lenten exercises of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. First and foremost, in prayer we literally pause to listen. We do our best to quiet ourselves and ask God to speak to us in the depths of our hearts. By fasting, we learn to silence the demands of those physical cravings that too often take first priority in our lives. And through the practice of giving alms, we train ourselves to hear the voice of "the least of these," in whom Christ himself is present. This Lent, may we respond wholeheartedly to God's command to listen to his Son. 2º DOMINGO DE CUARESMA Qué montaña de nuestra vida debemos de escalar para ser testigos de la transfiguración de Jesús? Seguramente primero, debemos de escalar la montaña de saber escucharlo y llevarlo hasta lo profundo de nuestra vida. Además, de abrir nuestro corazón para tocar su presencia. Cuando lleguemos a la cima de la montaña sentiremos la satisfacción de haber trabajado y luchado hasta el cansancio para lograr un mundo más justo y humano. La Cuaresma es un tiempo muy especial que la Iglesia nos brinda cada año para acompañar a Jesús hasta el Monte Calvario. Este camino hacia la montaña también es un paso de subir y escoger la visión de lo divino, que fue lo que Jesús trató de hacer que sus discípulos vieran, y escucharan lo que venía. Su gloria! "Ahí se transfiguró en su presencia: su rostro se puso resplandeciente como el sol y sus vestiduras se volvieron blancas como la nieve" (Mt 17, 2). Estas palabras del Evangelio son muy importantes para tener en cuenta en nuestra oración y tiempo de trabajo durante los cuarenta días, ya que son nuestra esperanza en la Resurrección. La cruz, sí, eso lo sabemos muy bien, primero, el sufrimiento sublimado hasta el extremo por amor a una sociedad más justa. Para luego disfrutar de los frutos del trabajo realizado en la Pascua ya cercana. No olvidemos durante la semana que la Transfiguración es un regalo tangible de Dios para todas las personas de fe. La semana pasada Jesús nos invitaba a vencer la tentación para que al vencerla podamos ser transfigurados en personas más buenas. Tentación y gloria son parte de la vida cotidiana. Se trata de vencer para brillar en la sencillez del amor de Dios. 4 Sharing the Gospel Peter, James, and John had walked up the mountain with Jesus. When they got to the top, Jesus looked different. Rays of bright light came from his face. His robes became white. Then a voice from a cloud said, "This is my Son whom I love. In him I am well pleased. Listen to him." The three apostles were scared and fell on the ground and covered their heads with their arms. Then Jesus touched them and said, "Don't be afraid." In today's Gospel reading, Jesus showed his closest friends - Peter, James, and John - what heaven would be like. Jesus' friends were amazed to see Moses and Elijah talking to Jesus. Moses and Elijah had gone to heaven hundreds of years before this day. Then Peter, James and John heard God's voice from the cloud. Jesus, their friend and teacher, was God's Son. They fell down in fear. You might, too, if you were there. 5 First Holy Communion Mass First Holy Communion Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 9:30am in our parish church, Saint John the Evangelist. Parents of children, in our Religious Education program preparing to receive their First Holy Communion this year, must come to the parish office (during office hours) to register their child or children for the First Holy Communion Ceremony. You must bring a Certificate of Baptism for the child receiving First Holy Communion.
