1 SIDEWINDER SCENE On behalf of the Smith staff, I want to welcome you to another fantastic year for your kids. Year after year, the Smith community shows tremendous support and dedication to the success of your students. That is directly related to your efforts. Our staff is extremely excited to begin our seventeenth year! Students will be given a set of textbooks for both home and school use, thereby eliminating the need to carry heavy books to school. Have your student ask each of their teachers about what textbook they need for that class. Each student will receive a planner that we suggest you review. The student planner contains detailed information on dress code, attendance, bell schedule, our reassessment practice, student Sidewinder Way, late start days, holidays and breaks. Planners are used to keep track of assignments and instead of passes if a student needs to be out of class. Please be advised that Smith Junior High is a closed campus and for the safety of our students we request that you call ahead; 24 hour notice or no later than the start of the school day, before visiting campus to have lunch with your student. Again, thanks for all the time you take to make sure your child has a positive junior high experience. It has been said it is far better to be a Sidewinder, than not to be On Tuesday, August 21st from 6:00-7:30pm we are having our Open House for parents only. We have planned a mini school day for you, so you will follow your child s class schedule. During each class, teachers will share the curriculum and tell you specifically about how their class operates. Your student should provided you with a copy of their schedule along with a letter explaining the details of this evening. Ending the evening, we will have a Title I presentation in the Media Center. Adults that stay will be entered into a drawing for some gift cards.

2 What is Title I Smith Junior High receives additional supplemental funds through a Title I grant from the federal government to provide extra supplementary services for all of our students. Your children will benefit directly or indirectly from this extra help. At Smith, these funds along with other federal resources will be consolidated to support school wide positive changes. Funds can be used to: Hire highly qualified instructional personnel to assist teachers within the classrooms Provide training for staff and teachers Provide supplemental instructional materials and technology Ensure high-quality School wide Programs Increase parent involvement participation We are pleased to have these funds to provide high quality instruction for all children. 3 Parents Right to Know Title I Schoolwide and/or Target Assistance Programs We are pleased to notify you that in accordance with the Every Students Succeeds Act, 2015, you have the right to request information regarding the professional qualifications of your child s teacher. Specifically, you may request the following: Whether the teacher has met State qualification and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction. Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria has been waived. The baccalaureate degree major of the teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree. Whether the child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications. August 31st Super Hero (dress as your favorite super hero, please remember to follow the dress code) Write Yourself A Lower State Tax Bill* A tax credit is different from a deduction. With a tax credit, you may subtract the entire contribution from your Arizona state tax bill. That means you get it back dollar for dollar! It is a win-win! Each married couple can donate up to $400 and single persons up to $200. The deadline to donate for this year is April 15. This money is returned to you on your state income tax, dollar for dollar. 5 Do you need to pick up your student early? Did you know? If your family has been faced with financial hardship such as loss of a job, reduction in work hours or change in household size, you may be eligible for the Free & Reduced meal program. The number to call is , if you know that you will be picking up your student early from school for any reason. When you call ahead, we can have your student at the front office at the time you arrive. For your student s safety, please present your ID when signing your student out. We must be notified if you will be having someone other than yourself pick up your student. This includes anyone listed under Emergency Contacts. This person must also show their ID when signing the student out. If you qualify, this can help to reduce stress and strain that may be impacting your family. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the Cafeteria Manager at Project M.E.S.A. 7th Grade Parent Meeting Wednesday, August 22 at 7:00pm Kino Junior High Auditorium Parents are invited to preview Project MESA lessons and meet the instructors at an evening overview. Seventh grade Project MESA lessons are taught during Science class periods and parents are invited to all presentations.
