DISSERTATION "Disaster and deviation: Narratives of the Catastrophe in Contemporary Chile." I explore how the disaster and its representations are closely linked to figures of madness and deviant sexuality in contemporary Chilean texts. I argue that this artistic focus on destruction and the deviant constitute an antagonist response to the contemporary discourses of economic advances and progress during the last two decades. The works that I investigate created a distorted vision, what I call a counter catalogue of the nation, showing that the disaster is not a state of exception but a condition of existence that exposes the precarious life of certain communities such as the homosexual. The theoretical framework of the Biopolitics, the Queer Theory and Performance Studies supports my analysis of different authors and genres such the José Donoso s novel Hell has no limits, the urban chronicles from Pedro Lemebel, and the movie Tony Manero, from Pablo Larraín. The critics have studied these two decades predominantly through the lens of trauma and memory. I focus on the textual links between disaster and deviance, particularly the structural violence perpetrated by the State, which creates catastrophic existences for populations categorized as outsiders.
