A MARRYING OF SENSES Rioja Alavesa's Wine Route Flavoring Rioja Alavesa means diving into a pool of new sensations. Bright and in tense cors that vary according to the light, in the smell you can distinguish the scent of earth, flowers and fresh fruit, without mentioning the toasted smell of tradition and history. To the palate its soft, velvety, balanced and leaves a trace that will remain in your mind until you return to these lands. Territory The Route is built by the regions of Baños de Ebro, Kripan, Elciego, Elvillar, Labastida, Laguardia, Lanciego, Lapuebla de Labarca, Leza, Moreda de Alava, Navaridas, Oyón, Samaniego, Villabuena de Alava y Yécora and the Councils of Barriobusto, Labraza, Páganos and Salinillas de Buradón. These towns, traditionally linked to the culture of wine still posses a certain medieval charm and keep vast natural, archeological and artistic heritage.
Location The Route develops itself through a land south of Euskade, at the reiver- side of the Ebro and protected by the southern face of the Sierra de Cantabria. The slopes are steep and the climate is the appropriate for grape- vines. Traditions kept since ancient civilizations. The capital, Laguardia, is 45km away from Vitoria-Gasteiz and less than 18km from Logroño (the distance from the port is of 45km, while the distance by road is 62 km). The airports of Logroño, Vitoria y Bilbao give easy access by air, while the A-68 highway and the N-111 road give excellent communication by land.
Caracteristics The Rioja Alavesa has over 13.500 hectares of vineyards, with a production of 40 million liters of wine per year. The wines, elaborated under strict measures of quality, dictated by the Regulating Counsel of Rioja, are internationally renowned for their prestige. The quality of the bouillons is due, in great measure, to the clay soils, the weather and the setting of the vineyards behind the mountains of the Sierra, as well as to the dedication of its people and their attention in the perfect conjugation of history and novelty. Most of the wine is made from Tempranillo, a kind of grape made to grow cid, strong in color yet moderate in acidity. Other varieties you will find are: viura, garnacha, mazuelo, graciano, white garnacha and malvasía. As main characteristics in the extraordinary red wine of the Rioja Alavesa we can count the bright colors, fine scents, fruity flavors and exquisite taste. Its alcoholic content oscillates from 11 to 13 degrees. Resources Over a hundred establishments (cellars,museums, lodging, restaurants) havecomo together to create this particular Route in one of the most traditional territories of the Spanish wine culture. In the Rioja Alavesa, the cellars have been equipped with the latest in enological technology as well as new buildings, soma of which are true architectural jewels such as the Baigorri Cellars, designed by lñaki Aspiazu Iza, the Ysios Cellars by Santiago Calatrava or the complex Ciudad del Vino de Marqués de Riscal, work of Frank Gehry. Medieval cellars are adapting themselves to the new era and have learnt to combine guided tours with the preparation of exquisite wines. Beyond cellars, this Route offers great specialized stores, and museums dedicated exclusively to wine, where the visitor will be able to purchase the most prestigious of juices. The restaurants of the area offer the great duo made by the wines and the cuisine, traditional or novel.
Activities Besides enjoying the wine with all your senses, the Rioja Alavesa offers an inmense cultural, natural, archeological and artistic heritage intimately linked to the win culture that has lead the way of many generations.
