(fold here) Dear Family Member: My Great-Grandmother s Gourd is a moving story about a girl and the African village in which she lives. The village has just built their first pump to give them water from a well. It s a big change for their village. The great-grandmother is the only one who doesn t seem happy, however. She does not want to give up the ways of the past, when the villagers drew water from their trees in the dry season. I can see how people and things are the same and how they are different. It s easy to do that in this story because the story itself compares the past and present.
