Healthy Communities - Health Education Summer family time is here! The perfect time for staying healthy, active and hydrated. Here are three ideas to help you keep your family on the healthy track, this summer! 1. Create a water plan Many will think they are hungry but all they really need to do is drink some water. Water has zero calories and is the perfect drink to keep you hydrated during the hot summer months. When going out, bring water instead of soda and juice. Drink water 20 minutes prior to exercise. Keep a cold pitcher in the refrigerator. Have water bottles available to fill up with cold water. For outdoor sports during summer time, learn to drink a few sips of water every 15-20 minutes. Add fresh cut up fruits or veggies to water to give it a little flavor. 2. Color your days with fruits and veggies! Start your day with fresh fruits. A handful of dried fruit makes a great snack. Give kids 1 to 2 cups of fruit each day. Keep bite size veggies on the table. Color your plate with veggies and have your kids do the same. Pair vegetables with foods that your child enjoys. 3. Stay active Its summer time and you will want the kids to go outside to get active. Tips Start the day with a family stroll Set aside time every day for physical activity Play a simple game with the kids All it takes is a little planning to enjoy your summer and keep your family healthy! 1
