2 Health Note This September, in celebration of Latino Health Awareness Month, the Chronic Disease Prevention Program is promoting three steps that can help anyone achieve better health. The results from a recent study revealed many benefits in finding a doctor or dentist you like, quitting smoking, and eating healthy. The study was conducted with Hispanic or Latino men and women from four major cities in the United States. Of the 4,000 surveyed: 1 IN 3 MEN 1 IN 4 WOMEN had a dental cavity. 4 IN 5 MEN 7 in 10 WOMEN had at least one missing tooth. 1 IN 3 PEOPLE did not know they had diabetes. 1 IN 4 MEN and 1 IN 8 WOMEN smoked ONLY half of the people ate the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables. 2,000 ONLY 1 IN 100 MEN ate less than the recommended 2,300 mg of salt a day. Take these three steps: find a doctor or dentist you like, quit smoking and eat better, more often. Step 1: We recommend that you participate in health screens, find a doctor and a dentist who you like, and get regular check-ups. Step 2: Quit smoking! Start by talking about it with your doctor or by calling NO-BUTTS ( ) for more information. Step 3: Eat better, more often! Don t add salt to your meals and opt for low-sodium products. Select foods with very low saturated fat and include more fruits and veggies in your meals and snacks. It sounds like a lot of work, but it can be done! All you need to do is try, try, and try again! Don t give up! Find a doctor or dentist and schedule an appointment to get the tests or help you need. Quit smoking! Enjoy healthier foods more often! You ll be adding years to your life and be glad you did! 1

7 Pineapple & Strawberry Infused Water Makes 6 servings. 1 cup per serving. Ingredients: 6 Strawberries, sliced 1 1/2 cups of pinapple, cut up in chunks Ice Rethink Your Drink Infused Water Reci- Prep Time: 5 minutes Preparation: 1. Fill pitcher halfway with ice. 2. Add strawberries and pineapple chunks. 3. Fill with water. Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving. 4. Store in refrigerator and drink within 24 hours. Add onion and cook for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. 3. Add vegetables and seasonings to skillet and cook for 8 minutes more, stirring occasionally. 4. Sprinkle with cheese and serve hot. Ingredients ½ tablespoon vegetable oil 1 cup chopped onion 1 cup fresh or frozen corn, thawed 1 cup chopped zucchini 1 teaspoon dried oregano ¼ teaspoon salt 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 poblano pepper, seeded and chopped ¼ cup crumbled Queso Fresco cheese Nutrition information per servings: Calories 100, Carbohydrate 16 g, Dietary Fiber 3 g, Protein 3 g, Total Fat 3 g, Saturated Fat 1 g, Trans Fat 0 g, Cholesterol 5 mg, Sodium 170 mg 7
