2 Health Note It is October and the colors of fall are here purple, green, yellow, orange and white! It is the time for the fi rst winter harvest for squash, pumpkins and sweet potatoes to peak from the ground. Pretty soon these will be plump-- ready to be cooked and serve in fl avorful plates! Or, perhaps to be painted or artfully carved for a nice decoration? This year the Chronic Disease Prevention Program recommends fi llingup on real foods, creative money-saving ideas for leftover candy to save you the calories and fun festive activities to keep everyone moving. Plan a successful healthy season of fun, but first, talk to your kids about making smart choices and follow through with a healthy jumpstart! For example: Before a party or trick-or-treating event, at home fi llup on real food. Plan on a simple and easy but fi lling meal for yourself and your family. For example, try making whole grain bread sandwiches with spinach, tuna or, chicken breast with avocado and tomato. And, for the crunchy factor, sneak in carrot or celery sticks. The kids will love pairing these two. On trick-or-treat night, we suggest playing a game with your kids by offering a price to the one who reaches the most homes. Prepare by asking them to wear their sneakers and by bringing water for them to quench their thirst! But fi rst set some safety ground rules, like no eating candy until it is inspected at home and advice to stay close to mom and dad at all times while trick-or-treating. It s a good time to wear your pedometer to count your steps. This is a good time to also say one-piece of candy per house is plenty to keep! Add that there will be enough candy and if they re old enough, that you ll help them decide what to do with excess candy. Or, offer to buy candy back from them! Its candy you can use for holiday baking or stuff future birthday piñatas. When out trick-or-treating the right size bag will allow your child to move and stay safe. Make sure the container or bag they choose is small enough for them to hold. Using a pillow case can be a hazard anyone can trip over. Especially, for tiny feet and tiny hands to hold onto while walking in the dark through the neighborhood. If you are dressing up your home this season and having guests over, delight them with these holiday inspired ideas: Use real food for your activities, such as decorating oranges like Jack-O-Lanterns, making banana ghosts, and bobbing for apples. Put on some music and include plenty of physical activities, like a zombie dance party, three-legged monster race or pumpkin toss. Sneak in some nutrition to quench their thirst. Don t forget that candy during these days will be very popular and that the best way to cut sugar will be in the drinks you offer. Offer water, unsweetened tea, 100% juice, or fat-free/low-fat milk instead. Make a festive Halloween punch from sparkling water and a splash of 100% orange juice, garnished with plenty of orange slices and black grapes or blackberries. Try new adventures this harvest and during your trick-or-treating holiday. Make this unavoidable time for sweets, a time for healthy treats and memorable adventures for your family. 1

Este año, el Programa de Prevención de Enfermedades Crónicas recomienda los alimentos reales, la manera más creativa para evitar las calorías de los dulces y tal vez ahorrarle dinero. También, le invitamos a planear actividades divertidas para mantener a todos en movimiento. Planee una temporada exitosa, llena de diversión, pero primero, hable con sus hijos sobre como tomar decisiones saludables. Comience por prepararles una buena comida antes de salir a pedir dulces! Por ejemplo: Antes de una fi esta o de salir a pedir dulces, coman en casa con alimentos reales. Planee algo sencillo pero que los llene. Por ejemplo, sirva un sándwich hecho con pan de trigo entero, relleno de espinacas, pechuga de pollo o tuna, con rebanadas de aguacate y tomate. Acompáñelo con palitos de zanahoria y apio crujientes. A los niños les justara esta combinación. En la noche de trick-or-treat, le sugerimos el juego de darle un premio al niño que visite más casas. Prepare a sus hijos al pedirles que calcen sus tenis y a cargar agua para cuando les de sed. Es una buena actividad para su cuentapasos y ver cuantos pudo hacer. Proponga reglas a seguir, tales como el no abrir o comer ningún dulce hasta estar en casa y después de inspeccionarlos. Dígales que en todo momento mientras estén afuera, deben de estar cerca de mamá y papá. Este será un buen momento para aconsejarles aceptar un dulce por casa. Déjeles saber que al fi nal habrá sufi cientes dulces para todos, y si son de mayor edad, que los ayudara a elegir qué hacer con los dulces que sobren. A los niños mayores tal vez les será más atractivo que usted se los compre. Serán dulces que usted podrá usar para rellenar piñatas o para hornear en el futuro cercano. Por la seguridad de sus hijos antes de salir a pedir dulces elija una bolsa de tamaño apropiado. Asegúrese que la bolsa la puedan sostener y cargar si se llenara de dulces. Por ejemplo, una sobre funda o forro de almohada sería muy grande, y lo arrastrarían con el peligro de tropezarse, especialmente caminando en las calles obscuras. 7 Healthy & Refreshing Fruit Drink Recipe receta refrescante hecha con frutas y verduras Tangerine, Cucumber and Lemon Infused Water Makes 4 servings. 1 cup per serving. Ingredients 4 tangerines, sliced in wedges 1/2 cucumber, sliced 1 lemon, sliced 1 half gallon of water Prep Time: 5 minutes Preparation. 1. Fill pitcher halfway with ice. 2. Add sliced tangerines, cucumber and lemon. 3. Fill with water. Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving. 4. Store in refrigerator and drink within 24 hours.
