2 Health Note What will you do to show Dad some love this Father s Day? Most dads don t use their time to worry about their own health. Instead they worry about work and family. This Father s Day show your appreciation and join us in the opportunity to help all fathers and father fi gures get some balance and wellness into their busy routine. Here are fi ve ways to give him the day he deserves and kick start some habits that will keep on giving! 1. Start Dad s Day with a Healthy Breakfast: Studies show that eating breakfast is important to keeping a healthy weight. It is essential during morning activities to help us stay energized until lunch time. A complete breakfast includes three food groups, like, fruit or vegetables, low-fat milk or alternate and whole grains. Adding a source of lean protein and/or fi ber (e.g., look for 100 percent whole grains) will help keep Dad s appetite in check so he doesn t ask for a higher calorie snack or lunch. Source: CDC-Healthy Weight it s not a diet, it s a lifestyle! 2. Plan a Healthy Father s Day Outing: Get the whole family involved and go to the beach or park to play soccer or baseball. Not only do these activities get you moving but you are spending quality time together. The health benefi ts of physical activity are endless! Helps with weight control, reducing risk of chronic disease, strengthening bones, improving mental health and increasing Dad s chance of living a longer, healthier life. And it s fun! 3. Why stop there? Organize something to do with Dad on a regular basis, like signing up for a softball league or other organized sport. This ensures that Dad (and you) get regular physical activity and spend more quality time together other than just on Father s Day. Dad will love it! 4. Make Dad a Healthy Lunch from the Grill: Father s Day is a great time for families to have a backyard barbecue. It s hard to mess up a meal with grilling and it allows for the opportunity to talk, laugh and work on something together. For a successful meal from the grill meal, try... Lean cuts of meat such as chicken breast, pork or beef tenderloin, fi rm-fl eshed fi sh such as salmon, tilapia or halibut or extra fi rm tofu. Trim off all visible fat before grilling. Avoid charring the meat and use a low-sodium marinade to add fl avor. Grill veggies and/or fruit such as peppers, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, pineapples, mangoes or peaches for color and complete nutrition. Make the meal family style and tell everyone to dig in! 5. Serve Him a Rainbow for Dinner: Support him in starting a balanced meal plan, with 5-10 servings a day of fruit and vegetables of all colors. This will ensure he gets all the vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients (disease-fi ghting nutrients that give fruits and vegetables their color) he needs. Eating the rainbow can strengthen the immune system, lower the risk of cancer and diabetes, reduce blood pressure and maintain heart health, improve memory, and keep bones and teeth strong. You can get Dad started on the right track by making him a delicious, healthy dinner with vegetables, fruit, legumes and whole grains. This very healthy way of eating can help Dad maintain a healthy weight. It is a heart-healthy diet to help prevent hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease. Comience el Día del Padre con un desayuno saludable: Estudios indican que el desayuno es importante para mantener un peso saludable. Es esencial para las actividades de la mañana porque nos ayuda a llegar al almuerzo con energía. Un desayuno completo incluye por lo menos tres grupos alimenticios, como, la fruta o verduras, leche reducida u una alternativa baja en grasa y granos enteros. Prepárale un Almuerzo Saludable a La Parrilla: El Día Del Padre es un buen momento para cocinar a la parrilla con la familia. Es difícil echar a perder una comida a la parrilla y permite la oportunidad de platicar, reír y trabajar en algo juntos. Para una parrillada saludablemente exitosa, elija Cortes magros de carne, como la pechuga de pollo, cerdo o lomo de res, pescado de carne fi rme como el salmón, tilapia o el halibut o tofu extra fi rme. Recorte toda la grasa visible antes de asar. Evite la carbonización o quemar la carne y para sabor, use un adobo bajo en sodio. También cocine a la parrilla verduras y/o frutas como los pimientos, calabacitas, tomate, hongos, cebolla, piña, mangos o duraznos para darle color a su platillo y ofrecer una nutrición completa. Cocine al estilo de su familia y dígales a todos que aprovechen! 5. Para la Cena, Sírvale un Arco Iris de Colores: Apoye a papá con un plan de alimentación saludable que incluya de 5 a 10 pociones de frutas y verduras de todos los colores al día. Esto asegurara que papá reciba las vitaminas, minerales y fi tonutrientes (nutrientes que ayudan a combatir enfermedades y que le dan color a las frutas y verduras) que él necesita. Ingredients 2 cups of seedless watermelon, cubed 10 fresh basil leaves Ice Prep Time: 5 minutes Preparation. 1. Fill pitcher halfway with ice. 2. Add cubed watermelon and basil. 3. Fill with water. Makes 5 servings. 1 cup per serving Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes Nutrition information per serving: Calories 32, Carbohydrate 5 g, Dietary Fiber 2 g, Protein 2 g, Total Fat 1 g, Saturated Fat 1 g, Trans Fat 0 g, Cholesterol 1 mg, Sodium 31 mg Ingredients 1 1/4 pounds zucchini (about 3 medium zucchini) 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil 1 tablespoon dried oregano 2 cloves garlic, fi nely chopped teaspoon grated lemon peel 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Preparation 1. Cut zucchini in half crosswise, then cut each half into 4 lengthwise sticks. 2. Heat oil in a heavy nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. 3. Add oregano and garlic, and sauté for about 2 minutes. 4. Add zucchini and lemon peel, and sauté for about 3 minutes until zucchini is lightly browned. 5. Mix in Parmesan cheese and pepper.
