2 Hola! Soy Jaime y quiero contarles mi historia. Vivo con mi mamá y mi papá, Mila y Jimmy, y mis dos hermanos: Gabriel y Diego. Me gusta jugar béisbol y tenis, así como nadar. Hi! I m Jaime and I want to tell you my story. I live with my mom and dad, Mila and Jimmy, and my two brothers, Gabriel and Diego. I like to swim, play baseball and tennis. 3

3 Cuando tenía 3 años, mis papás notaron que por todo lloraba o me molestaba. Siempre tenía sed y tomaba mucha agua y jugos. Aun así, no se me quitaba la sed. Orinaba mucho y, a veces, no podía aguantarme. When I was 3, my parents noticed that I cried all the time or easily became upset. I was always very thirsty and drank lots of water and juices. But, I still could not quench this thirst. I urinated a lot, and sometimes, I was unable to hold it. 4

4 Un día mis papás decidieron llevarme al hospital. Allí me hicieron la prueba de glucosa, para medir el azúcar en mi sangre. Nos dijeron que mis niveles eran más altos de lo normal, y que tenía diabetes Tipo 1. One day my parents decided to take me to the hospital. There they did the glucose test to check my blood sugar. We were told that my levels were higher than normal, and that I had Type 1 diabetes. 5

5 Cuando tienes diabetes Tipo 1, tu páncreas no produce insulina. Por eso tus niveles de glucosa suben peligrosamente. Sin insulina, tu cuerpo no tiene energías para jugar, y te sientes muy cansado. When you have Type 1 diabetes, your pancreas does not produce insulin and your glucose levels rise dangerously. Without insulin, your body has no energy to play, and you feel very tired. 6

6 En el hospital, conocimos a un endocrinólogo pediátrico, el médico que cuida y educa a los niños y las niñas con diabetes. Además, hablamos con una nutricionista, quien nos enseñó a comer saludable. Nos dieron un lancetero y un glucómetro, una maquinita que se usa para medir mi glucosa varias veces al día. At the hospital, we met a pediatric endocrinologist, a doctor who takes care and educates children with diabetes. We also talked to a nutritionist, who taught us how to eat healthy. We got a lancet and a glucometer, a small machine that is used to measure my blood sugar several times a day. 7

7 Mi familia y yo hemos aprendido a comer saludable y a tomar mejores decisiones a la hora de escoger los alimentos. Me gustan mucho las frutas y los vegetales, y la comida que cocinan mis papás. My family and I have learned to eat healthier and make better decisions when choosing foods. I really like fruits and vegetables, and the food that my parents cook. 8

8 Vivir con diabetes Tipo 1 no me ha limitado a hacer las cosas que me gustan. Mi mamá y mi papá me han enseñado a que tengo que cuidarme y aprender a vivir con esta condición. Tengo muchos sueños y, para lograrlos, voy a trabajar mucho. Cuando crezca, quiero ser jugador de béisbol de Grandes Ligas. Y tú, qué quieres ser? Dibuja lo que quieres ser cuando seas grande. Living with Type 1 diabetes has not prevented me from doing the things I like. My mom and dad have taught me to take care of myself and learn to live with this condition. I have many dreams and I will work hard to achieve them. When I grow up, I would like to be a Major League baseball player. And you, what do you want to be? Draw what you want to be when you grow up. 9
