2 GRAMMAR : How to say «my»,«your»,«his»,«her»... in Spanish? «my»,«your»,«his»,«her» are called possessive adjectives. These words say to whom or to what something belongs. In English we have 7 possessive adjectives, as shown below : This is my house...your house...his house...her house...its house...our house... their house... In Spanish there are more but we are going to focus on «my»,«your»,«his»,«her» for the time being. Firstly, remember that all Spanish nouns are either masculine or feminine. English Spanish Singular Masculine Singular Feminine Plural my mi mi mis your tu tu tus his, her su su sus As you can see «my»,«your»,«his»,«her» have all 2 equivalents. A few examples below : - My father = the noun «father» being masculine and singular in Spanish, we use : «Mi padre». - Your mother = the noun «mother» being feminine and singular in Spanish, we use : «Tu madre». - Your dog = the noun «dog» being masculine and singular in Spanish, we use : «Tu perro». - My house = the noun «house» being feminine and singular in Spanish, we use : «Mi casa». - My dogs = the noun «dog» being plural in Spanish, we use :«Mis perros». - Your dogs = the noun «dog» being plural in Spanish, we use :«Tus perros». «His» and «Her» are trickier. Here's where it gets interesting for English speakers: - His father = Su padre - Her father = Su padre 2

3 You might have noticed that "his" and "her" are exactly the same in the above sentences. The same occurs with... His mother = Su madre Her mother = Su madre Easy, isn t it!! Other examples : His dog = Su perro. Her dog = Su perro. His dogs = Sus perros. Her dogs = Sus perros. His house = Su casa. Her house = Su casa. 3

10 GRAMÁTICA / CONJUGACIÓN : In Spanish, we have four ways to translate "YOU" : "tú", "vosotros", "usted", and "ustedes". 1. " Tú " is used when you talk to one child or one adult you know as a friend or a relative. 2. " Usted ", shows more respect and is used to address people you have respect for or you have just met (teachers for instance). "Usted" is used for one person. 3. " Vosotros " (masculine) or " vosotras " ( for feminine) are used when you talk to a group of people (two or more) you know well. 4. " Ustedes " shows more respect and is used to address people you have respect for or you have just met (teachers for instance). "Ustedes" is used for a group of people. Very often we just don't use pronouns (yo, tú, el, ella, nosotros...) at all in a sentence. Example : «I have a brother» = «Yo tengo un hermano»... OR JUST... «Tengo un gato» - WITHOUT «YO». 10
