3 The verb TENER & Adjectives The verb tener means to have. It is a stem-changing verb e (ie) and is conjugated as follows: Yo tengo I have Nosotros tenemos we have Tú tienes you (familiar) have Vosotros teneís you (plural-informal) have Él/Ella/ he/she has Ellos tienen they have Usted tiene you (formal) have Ustedes tienen you have (plural-formal) Tener can be used with descriptive adjectives to say what kind of hair and eyes a person has. In Spanish we place the adjective after the noun. For example, if someone has blond hair you will say: Tiene el pelo rubio; the word blond=rubio comes after the word hair=pelo. In Spanish you match gender and number. Therefore, your adjective has to be plural as well. Modelo: I have green eyes. You have curly blonde hair. Los ojos azules Los ojos verdes Los ojos marrones blue eyes green eyes brown eyes El pelo negro. El pelo castaño El pelo rubio Black hair. Dark brown hair. Blonde Hair El pelo lacio. El pelo rizado. 4 El pelo pelirojo. El pelo corto. Calvo. Red hair. Short hair. Bald. El pelo largo. Long hair. Pelo canoso. White hair.
5 Práctica I Now you practice by writing the following sentences in Spanish: 1) She has dark brown hair. 2) You (familiar) have gray hair. 3) I have curly hair. 4) We have green eyes. 5) They have blue eyes. 6) He has blue eyes and blonde hair. 7) I have brown eyes and light brown hair. 8) We have long, curly hair. 9) You (formal) have short, grey hair. 10) She has wavy blond hair.
