El Verbo Ir
The Verb IR Ir DEF: to go yo VOY VAMOS nosotros tu VAS X el/ella/usted VA VAN ellos(as) /ustedes
Saying Where Someone Is Going n IR + A + PLACE l I m going to the office l Voy a la oficina. n If the place is masculine, a contraction must be formed. l A + EL = AL l Sapita is going to the gym. l Sapita va al gimnasio.
Practice ir + a + place Practice: n The students are going to the auditorium. n Mom and I are going home. n You are going to the library. n I am going to the gym.
Adónde vs Dónde n Adónde and Dónde both mean where n Use adónde to mean (to) where (is someone going). n Use this when there is a verb indicating motion, such as ir l (To) where are you going? l (To) where is Ricardo swimming? l Adónde vas? l Adónde nada Ricardo? n Make the verb agree with the subject!
Adónde vs Dónde n To ask where someone is going use: Adónde + ir + subject? n Where are they going? l Adónde van ellos? n Where are we going? l Adónde vamos nosotros?
Adónde vs Dónde n Adónde and Dónde both mean where n Use dónde to ask where someone/ something is (as in location). n Use verbs that talk about location! l Estar, trabajar l Where is the book? l Where do you work? l Dónde esta el libro? l Dónde trabajas?
TIEMPO!
Useful Phrases n Qué hora es? n Son las / Es la n A qué hora es? n A las / A la n Cuarto n Media n What time is it? n It is o clock. n (At) What time is? n At o clock. n Quarter of an hour n Half an hour
Talking about the current time. n When the minute hand is on the right side of the clock: n l Use current hour + y + minutes after for the number of minutes AFTER the hour. When the minute hand is on the left side of the clock: l Use next hour + menos + minutes till for the number of minutes BEFORE the hour. 12:50 Es la una menos diez. 12:45 Es la una menos cuarto. 12:40 Es la una menos veinte. 12:00 Son las doce. 12:10 Son las doce y diez. 12:15 Son las doce y cuarto. 12:30 Son las doce y media.
What s up with that Es la una business??? n Es la una is only used for the 1 o clock hour. 1:00, 1:20, 1:30 etc. n Also, for the times used to say till 1 Such as 12:50, 12:45, 12:35. l This is because we say, 10 till 1, a quarter till 1, or 25 till 1. n SOOO, Whenever we say the hour and the first number in the formula is 1, use Es la n Es la una. Es la una y veinte. Es la una y media. n Es la una menos diez. Es la una menos cuarto. Es la una menos veinticinco. n Remember time is feminine! CURRENT HOUR + Y + MINUTES AFTER NEXT HOUR + MENOS + MINUTES TILL
So I don t get the menos part! For example: 8:55 n Decide what the next hour is: 9 o clock (nueve) n Decide how many minutes until the next hour: 5 minutes (cinco) n Plug this into the formula (next) hour + menos + minutes (till): Nueve menos cinco. n Check your answer by reading backwards. 5 till 9
Let s Practice Current Time! How do you say the following times?? n 4:45 n 9:14 n 12:48 n 7:57 n 1:24 n 3:19 n 8:30 n 12:15
Talking about when something will happen. n To ask what time an event is use: A qué hora es + event? n To answer use: A la or A las n Notice we want to ask AT what time something is, so the A is a clue to help you remember. n The A la and A las rule applies just the same as Es la and Son las.
Can you answer these quéstions? n A qué hora vas a la cafeteria? n A qué hora llegas a escuela? n A qué hora vas a la clase de espanol? n A qué hora vas al gimnasio?
A quick recap! n To ask the time: l Qué hora es? n To answer: l Son las / Es la n To ask what time an event is use: l A qué hora es? n To answer: l A las / A la
