4 1) IR and the FUTURE. The conjugation of ir (English to go) is irregular in the present tense. Yo voy I am going, I go Tu vas You are going, you go El va He is going, he goes Ella va She is going, you go Nosotros vamos We are going, we go Vosotros vais You are going, you go Ellos van They are going, they go Ellas van They are going, they go Uds. van You are going, you go Vamos a la ciudad. Vas tú a la playa los domingos? Ellas van a la tienda. Adónde van ellos? Voy al banco los miércoles. Quieres ir con nosotros? Quiero ir al supermercado. We are going to the city. Do you go to the beach on Sundays? They are going to the store. (To) where are they going? I go to the bank on Wednesdays. Do you want to go with us? I want to go to the supermarket. Whether this verb IR is translated to go or to be going depends on the context of the sentence. 2) Ex.: Complete the following sentences with the correct form of ir. 1. El hombre y la mujer al trabajo a las siete de la mañana. 2. Nosotros al cine los sábados. 3. Quiere Ud. con nosotros. 4. La estudiante a la escuela los martes. 5. Los niños quieren al circo porque quieren ver los elefantes. 6. Yo al gimnasio porque quiero hacer ejercicio. 7. tú al campo los fines de semana? 8. Ernesto no quiere a España pero Mariana si quiere. 3). The Future with the Verb IR. IR + a + an infinitive is used to express future time. The English equivalent is to be going to (do something). Ellos van a cantar esta noche. Vamos a decidir más tarde. They are going to sing tonight. We are going to decide later.
5 To form a question using this construction, place the subject of the sentence either directly after the conjugated form of ir or after the infinitive. Van ellos a cantar esta noche? Are they going to sing tonight? Van a cantar ellos esta noche? Are they going to sing tonight? A qué hora va a llegar el tren? At what hour is the train going to arrive? Often the subject pronoun is not necessary. Vas a viajar a España? Vamos a salir ahora. Are you going to travel to Spain? We are going to leave now. 4). Complete each of the translations below, using the correct SIMPLE PRESENT form of the verb IR. 1. I'm not going to ask him. Yo no a preguntarle. 2. They (ELLAS) are not going to come. Ellas no a venir. 3. You (VOSOTROS) are not going to answer me. Vosotros no a contestarme. 4. My mother and I are going to the beach. Mi madre y yo a la playa. 5. Are you (TU) going to tell your father the truth? a decirle la verdad a tu padre? 6. The train is going to arrive early. El tren a llegar temprano. 7. You (USTEDES) always go to the movies on Sunday.
