3 Prólogo Urban Oasis La empresa inmobiliaria de Jerez Urban Oasis ha recibido el primer premio a las Mejores Redes Sociales de España La prestigiosa consultora en formación inmobiliaria CENIC le ha otorgado este galardón en reconocimiento a la labor, innovadora en España, que ha comenzado a realizar Urban Oasis para promocionar y vender propiedades inmobiliarias a través de las redes de mayor éxito en el mundo: Facebook,Twitter, Linkedin y You Tube. Urban Oasis es una empresa especializada en la gestión inmobiliaria con sede en Jerez, bajo la dirección de los hermanos Pablo y Carolina Ruiz Amo. Se trata de dos jóvenes emprendedores que han desarrollado buena parte de su experiencia y formación en el extranjero (en universidades de París, Londres, Chicago y Montreal), lo que les permite aportar a este nuevo negocio que emprenden en nuestra ciudad una muy elevada cualificación y los más modernos avances en el sector. Entre estos avances destaca la apuesta por el uso de las redes sociales como medio para promocionar y aumentar las ventas de la empresa, aspecto en el que, por su carácter novedoso, han sabido destacar desde el primer momento. Pablo y Carolina, que acaban de participar en un prestigioso foro del sector en Las Vegas, aseguran que las redes sociales son un pilar fundamental de nuestra empresa desde el primer día. Traen así a Jerez elrevolucionario concepto de gestión inmobiliaria que está triunfando en Estados Unidos. Por ello, Urban Oasis se ha convertido en la inmobiliaria española con mayor número de seguidores en redes sociales en auge como Twitter, y están presentes a través de páginas de empresa y perfiles en las redes y canales más utilizados de Internet. En este sentido, los hermanos Ruiz Amo emplean con una gran aceptación herramientas como You Tube para mostrar vídeos de algunas de las propiedades que ofrecen en su portfolio comercial, mientras que Facebook o Twitter les permiten mantener un diálogo constante con sus clientes actuales y potenciales. Los dos jóvenes emprendedores emplean las redes sociales no sólo para comercializar sus propiedades y tener acceso a nuevas ofertas y demandas, sino también como plataforma de marketing indirecto. En este sentido, realizan una activa promoción de la ciudad de Jerez como un lugar atractivo para vivir e invertir a través de páginas en Facebook destinadas específicamente a este fin dirigidas a un público fundamentalmente extranjero en las que ofrecen recomendaciones sobre lugares que visitar y actividades que realizar en nuestra ciudad. 5 Jerez: Historia y Actualidad A lo largo de la historia, Jerez ha sido un enclave fuertemente influenciado por las distintas culturas que se han asentado en sus tierras, numerosos restos así lo atestiguan tanto en la propia ciudad como en su entorno. Vestigios de la Xera fenicia, la fuertemente romanizada Ceret, la importante Sherish musulmana y las posteriores bellísimas construcciones cristianas, ofrecen un amplio abanico de estilos arquitectónicos y edificios singulares, que hacen de Jerez una preciosa ciudad con una fisonomía urbana realmente peculiar. Pocos lugares en España gozan de un reconocimiento internacional tan amplio como el que Jerez disfruta. Gracias a su vino, el Jerez o Sherry, el nombre de nuestra ciudad ha traspasado fronteras hace mucho tiempo, hasta llegar a universalizarse. Pero Jerez no es tan solo sus vinos y una arquitectura de edificios singulares, Jerez, ofrece mucho más a todos: tierra del caballo cartujano, del toro de lidia, cuna del arte flamenco, ciudad del motor y los grandes eventos, centro monumental declarado de interés Artístico - Histórico. En la actualidad Jerez es una gran ciudad donde la tradición convive en perfecta armonía con la más pura modernidad: grandes centros comerciales y avenidas confluyen en un centro histórico alegre y bullicioso, donde las compras y el tapeo se dan la mano. Todos estos rasgos distintivos, sumados a la extraordinaria situación geográfica y su clima, a atractivos turísticos únicos y diferenciados, y a las modernas infraestructuras, garantizan Jerez como la elección perfecta para vivir y visitar. 6 San Miguel, patria de la bulería, fue absorbido relativamente pronto por el resto de la ciudad, y sus gitanos se vieron obligados a mantener sus oficios tradicionales, como la herrería, con los que a duras penas podían sobrevivir. Eso sí, el ritmo del martillo golpeando en el yunque resulta fundamental para entender la génesis de este cante. Los gitanos de Santiago tuvieron un poco más de suerte gracias a la situación geográfica del barrio, abierta a las tierras fértiles junto al río Guadalete. Cuenta Lefranc que fueron contratados en equipos para trabajar en los cortijos y la vida, aunque dura, era mejor que la de los gitanos de dentro de la ciudad. Por la noche disfrutaban de siguiriyas, soleares, bulerías y algunas tonás, todo cante sin guitarra pero ocasionalmente con baile. Afortunadamente, la larga convivencia y la creciente valoración del arte que ejecutaban los gitanos fue positiva para su paulatina integración, que en la actualidad es total en Jerez. Porque la ciudad es consciente de que, junto a los caballos cartujanos, el vino y, recientemente, las carreras de motos, el flamenco es una de sus señas de identidad. Además de una riqueza cultural y turística que se potencia incluso desde las instituciones. Así, desde mediados de los años 90 funciona en el Palacio de Pemartín el Centro Andaluz de Flamenco, donde su biblioteca especializada, su fonoteca y sus audiovisuales nos descubrirán todos l os secretos de esta manifestación artística. A poca distancia, en la Plaza de Belén, se construye el Centro Nacional del Flamenco, una apuesta todavía más fuerte que algunos en Jerez esperan como agua de mayo. Pero si de algo se puede estar seguro es de que ese apoyo de las administraciones puede ser valioso, pero no fundamental. Porque los jerezanos, gitanos y payos, viven cada día el flamenco en lo más hondo. Y lo hacen cuando frecuentan locales como el Arco de Santiago, Arriate o Damajuana, los tres en Santiago, o La Lola, en San Miguel. Because of its wine, Jerez or Sherry, the name of the city crossed international borders many years ago and has since become truly universal. However, Jerez is not only characterised by its wine and unique architecture but offers much more: it is the home of the Carthusian horse and the Fighting Bull, the cradle of flamenco, a city of motor racing and other important events, and the site of a city centre declared as of historical and artistic significance. Nowadays, Jerez is a big city where tradition coexists in perfect harmony with the latest modern features: big shopping centres and avenues come together in a cheerful and busy historical city centre, where shopping and tapas bars go hand in hand. All these special features, in addition to its extraordinary geographical location and climate, to unique and different tourist attractions and to its modern facilities, transform Jerez as the perfect city to live in and visit. San Miguel, the home of the bulería, was absorbed relatively early into the rest of the city, and its Gypsies were obliged to keep up their traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, which allowed them to eke out a living. The rhythm of the hammer beating on the anvil, however, is basic to an understanding of the genesis of this variety of song. The Gypsies of Santiago were slightly luckier thanks to the barrio s location opposite the fertile lands by the River Guadalete. Lefranc tells us they used to be hired in groups to work on the country estates, and that their life, though tough, was better than that of the Gypsies inside the city. At night they would enjoy siguiriyas, soleares, bulerías and some tonás, all sung with occasional dancing but no guitar. Fortunately, years of coexistence and a growing appreciation of the Gypsies art helped towards their gradual integration, which in Jerez is now complete. The city is fully aware that besides its thoroughbred horses, its wine and, more recently, its motorcycle races, flamenco is one of its identifying features, and a source of cultural worth and tourism that is boosted even by the city s institutions. Since the mid-nineties, for instance, the Andalusian Flamenco Centre has been functioning at the Pemartín Palace, where all the secrets of flamenco are stored in its specialised library and its sound recording and audiovisual archives. Not far away, in Plaza de Belén, the National Flamenco Centre is under construction. It will be even more splendid, and is awaited with great eagerness by some in Jerez. If there is one thing we can be sure of, however, it is that administrative support is valuable but not fundamental. The people of Jerez, whether Gypsies or not, live flamenco each day to its roots, frequenting places like El Arco de Santiago, Arriate and Damajuana in Santiago, or La Lola in San Miguel. The art is also supported by at least 20 organisations ranging from flamenco clubs to cultural associations and discussion groups, each with its own headquarters and its bar, the walls hung with photographs of immortal artists. Localización Además de su aeropuerto internacional, las conexiones por carretera son excelentes, con la principal autopista norte-sur cruzando la ciudad, la conexión Jerez con Gibraltar y una tercera que une al este con Arcos y hacia Antequera. The city Sherry bodegas ring the centre while the famed equestrian school, the bullring and the flamenco schools all speak of deep-rooted culture. But the city s new shopping districts are modern and full of big retailers being now the largest in Andalucía. Events Jerez stages two big flamenco festivals the first in spring, the second in September. Carnival and Easter are huge, but the highlight of the year is the week-long May horse fair. Also in spring, the Spanish motorcycle grand prix almost doubles the town s population for a weekend. Location Apart from its own international airport, road connections are excellent, with the main north-south motorway running past the city, another new motorway connecting Jerez with Gibraltar and a third linking to the east linking the city with Arcos and towards Antequera. 16 El Flamenco Jerez está considerado la Cuna del Arte Flamenco. Esta ciudad ha sido desde el pasado siglo, la ciudad que más y mejores cantaores, bailaores y guitarristas ha dado el Flamenco. Los más significativos templos jerezanos, levantados a partir de la conquista cristiana, nominan los enclaves urbanos más castizos de la ciudad: el barrio de Santiago y el barrio de San Miguel, de donde es originaria la Bulería. En el mismo corazón del barrio de Santiago, ocupando el dieciochesco Palacio de Pemartín, se encuentra el Centro Andaluz de Flamenco, cuyas instalaciones equipadas con moderna tecnología audiovisual, su biblioteca especializada y su importante fonoteca nos introducen en la historia y el conocimiento de esta peculiar manifestación artística tan arraigada en el espíritu jerezano. Jerez ofrece el mejor flamenco de forma diaria en sus famosos tablaos flamencos, además de ciclos flamencos muy interesantes: desde recitales flamencos en la numerosas Peñas Flamencas de la ciudad, la tradicional Fiesta de la Bulería (en septiembre), hasta el famoso Festival Internacional de Flamenco de Jerez, que se celebra entre los meses de Febrero y Marzo, dentro de la programación cultural del Teatro Villamarta. El viajero también tiene la opción, probablemente más segura pero también más forzada, de entrar en alguno de los tres tablaos que funcionan en la ciudad para disfrutar de un espectáculo. O de contratar alguno de los circuitos especializados en flamenco que se ofrecen incluso desde Internet. Con un poco de suerte, el visitante puede deambular por alguna calle y escuchar el rasgeo o el taconeo que se practican en las, al menos, trece academias de baile y siete de guitarra de la ciudad. Un poco de amabilidad será suficiente para que entrar y vivir en directo cómo se entrenan estas futuras estrellas del toque y del baile. Eso sí, el cante no se aprende en ninguna escuela. 17 Flamenco Jerez is considered the Birthplace of Flamenco. This city has been, since the turn of the last century, the city which has produced the most, and best, singers, dancers and guitarists in the whole history of Flamenco. The most important churches in Jerez, built after the Christian conquest of the city, have lent their names to its most traditional quarters: Santiago and San Miguel, where the roots of the Bulería are to be found. In the very heart of the Santiago quarter, located in the Penmartin Palace, stands the Andalusian Flamenco Centre, equipped with the most up-to-date audiovisual technology, its specialised library and extensive sound archives provide an insight into the history and understanding of this very special art form which is so deeply rooted in the spirit of the local inhabitants. Jerez offers the very best of Flamenco each day in its famous tablaos, in addition to some very interesting flamenco performances: from flamenco recitals in the numerous Peña Flamenca clubs to be found dotted around the city, the traditional Bulería Festival (in September), to the famous Jerez International Flamenco Festival which takes place each year during February and March. Travellers also have the more conventional but less genuine option of a flamenco show at one of the city s three tablaos. Or they can sign on for one of the specialised flamenco tours that are now available even on the internet. With a little luck, the visitor will be able to wander down a street and hear the strumming or heel-tapping produced by at least 30 flamenco dance academies and seven guitar schools. A little goodwill is enough to gain entrance and see for ourselves how these young stars of the dance and guitar of the future are trained. La dilatada ascendencia de culturas a lo largo del tiempo, la Xera fenicia, el Ceret fuertemente romanizado o la poderosa Sherisch musulmana, hasta la reconquista de Jerez en por Alfonso X El Sabio, y su cristianización, han aportado a Jerez numerosos vestigios que enriquecen un patrimonio artístico de primer orden. Su centro antiguo, declarado como Centro Histórico-Artístico, nos ofrece barrios con auténtica solera, de recónditas calles, plazas y rincones, donde fuentes y naranjos se pierden entre palacios, iglesias y bodegas. Throughout its long history Jerez has been strongly influenced by the different cultures that have settled in its lands, each leaving its mark upon the already deep-rooted traditions of the city. These legacies now form an essential part of life in the city. The cultures of Phoenician Xera, the strongly Roman Ceret, the important Muslim Sherish all made their presence felt up until Alfonso X, The Wise, took Jerez back from the Moors in 1264 and was responsible for the conversion of the city to Christianity. This melting pot of cultures and knowledge has helped to enhance the artistic heritage of the city.
