2 Today is the fifth and last Sunday of Lent before the start of Holy Week. In the gospels, as Jesus nears the decisive events of his Passion in Jerusalem, the drama intensifies. We are drawn deeper and more dramatically into his Paschal Mystery. In John s gospel the raising of Lazarus from the dead is one of Jesus great signs; indeed, the one that preludes his own glorious resurrection, which unlike Lazarus is the definitive eschatological resurrection and not a return to earthly life as was Lazarus. Jesus resurrection will be the breakthrough in which the new creation is inaugurated. The full scene (longer than the one produced for this commentary) is dramatic. Lazarus of Bethany, one of Jesus closest friends (as were Martha and Mary) had died. Hoping that Jesus would arrive to heal him and prevent his death, the mourners are confronted with the definitiveness of his death. Alas, Jesus has arrived too late! Yet, although he himself weeps for love of Lazarus, he will change mourning into amazement and joy. At the heart of the scene is an announcement, a question and a response of faith. Jesus announces that he himself is the power that brings life where there is no life, hope where there is none and where all seems lost: he is the resurrection and the life. He asks Martha, Do you believe this? And Martha responds with a confession of faith: Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God. In Matthew s gospel it is Peter, inspired by the heavenly Father, who makes such an astounding profession. In John s gospel it is Martha. Jesus turns to his Father in prayer that his sign would produce the fruit of faith, and with the power of his command raises Lazarus, to the amazement of those present. As we near Holy Week, we too are asked, Do you believe this? We too prepare to hear the command of Jesus to us, Come forth! From our tombs and from the many wrappings that bind us, Christ raises and liberates us anew. Each Lent we arrive at this threshold between the journey of Jesus and its ultimate destination, the cross and the resurrection. Today s readings call to place our faith in the one whose boundless power the power that created all things and gives life to all will raise us up also. Having been baptized into Jesus death, and sharing in his passion, we are assured that we will also have an eternal share in his indestructible glorious life, his resurrection. This week, prior to Holy Week, the gospel calls us to bold belief, trust, hope, faith in the one who has entered our lives and shared our sufferings, and who calls each of us by name to rise every day to new life, just as he will call us one day to rise to eternal life in him. 3 Hoy es el quinto domingo de Cuaresma antes del comienzo de la Semana Santa. En los evangelios, cuando Jesús se acerca a los eventos decisivos de su Pasión en Jerusalén, el drama se intensifica. Somos atraídos más profundamente y más dramáticamente hacia el Misterio Pascual. En el evangelio de Juan la resucitación de Lázaro de entre los muertos es una de las señales mayores de Jesús; en sí, es el preludio de su propia gloriosa resurrección, cual a diferencia de la de Lázaro es la definitiva resurrección escatológica y no un simple retorno a la vida terrenal como la resucitación de Lázaro. La resurrección de Jesucristo será el gran logro que se inaugurara la nueva creación. El escenario completo (mas amplio del reproducido para este comentario) es dramático. Lázaro de Betania, uno de los amigos más cercanos de Jesús (tal como eran Marta y María) había muerto. Con la esperanza de que Jesús llegase a tiempo para sanarlo y prevenir su muerte, la familia y amigos de Lázaro son confrontados con su muerte. Ha llegado Jesús muy tarde! Pero, aunque llora con amor por su amigo Lázaro, el cambiará el luto en asombro y gozo. En el corazón de la escena hay un anuncio, una pregunta y una respuesta de fe. Jesús anuncia de que él mismo es el poder de dar vida donde no la hay, esperanza donde todo aparenta perdido: él es la resurrección y la vida. Le pregunta a Marta, Crees esto? Y Marta responde con una confesión de fe: Si, Señor, yo creo que eres el Cristo, el Hijo de Dios. En el evangelio de Mateo es Pedro el que responde con tal profesión estupenda, inspirado por el Padre celestial. En el evangelio de Juan es Marta la que así afirma. Jesús se vuelve a su Padre en oración para que su signo produzca el fruto de la fe, y con el poder ordena la resucitación de Lázaro, al asombro de todos presente. Acercándonos a Semana Santa, nosotros también se nos pregunta, Crees esto? También nosotros nos preparamos a oír la voz de Jesús, Ven afuera! De nuestras tumbas y de nuestras ataduras que nos oprimen, Cristo nos levanta y nos libera nuevamente. En cada Cuaresma llegamos al umbral entre la jornada de Jesús y su último destino, la cruz y la resurrección. Hoy las lecturas nos llaman a poner nuestra fe en el que con su poder inmensurable el poder que creó todo y da la vida nos resucitará también. Haber sido bautizados en la muerte de Jesucristo, y haber compartido en su Pasión, se nos asegura que también compartiremos eternamente en su gloriosa vida indestructible, en su resurreción. Esta semana, antes de Semana Santa, el evangelio nos llama a tener audaz convicción y confianza, esperanza y fe, en el que ha entrado en nuestras vidas y ha compartido nuestros sufrimientos, y nos llama a cada uno por nombre a levantarnos diariamente a una nueva vida, tal como él nos llamará un día a resucitar a la vida eterna con él. Children six years or older will be baptized through the CCD program.
