ARCHDIOCESE OF ST. LOUIS Cardinal Rigali Center 20 Archbishop May Drive St. Louis, Missouri Office of Sacred Worship p) f) The Joy of the Gospel Evangelization Commissioning Ceremony Solemnity of Pentecost 2018 Order of Commissioning Within Mass Following the homily, the Priest introduces the Commissioning using the following words. For the evangelization activity of the Church, the cooperation of a great many people is needed, so that communities as well as individuals may advance to full maturity in faith and continually show forth their faith. On this Solemnity of Pentecost, we are reminded that just as the Holy Spirit was poured forth upon Mary and the Apostles on that first Pentecost Sunday, the Holy Spirit was poured into our hearts at our baptism and His sevenfold gifts were sealed in our Confirmation. It is the power of the Holy Spirit which calls and enables each one of us to continue the mission of Jesus by bringing his love, mercy, and compassion to all those we encounter. Pope Francis has consistently challenged all Catholics to live the Joy of the Gospel. And now, let us call to mind the faith which we professed in our Baptism and renew our baptismal commitment to live as joyful missionary disciples. And so I ask you: Do you renounce Satan? And all his works? ARCHSTL.ORG
And all his empty promises? Or: Do you reject sin, so as to live in the freedom of God s children? Do you reject the glamor of evil, and refuse to be master by evil? Do you reject Satan, father of sin and prince of darkness? Then the priest continues: Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth? Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered death and was buried, rose again from the dead and is seated at the right hand of the Father? Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting? This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church.
We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. The priest then sprinkles the people with blessed water, while all sing a hymn that is baptismal in nature or focuses on the Holy Spirit. After the sprinkling, the Priest returns to the chair, where omitting the Creed, he directs the Universal Prayer. Universal Prayer Dear brothers and sisters, we gather as one to celebrate the good things that we have received from our God, as we now make our prayer for our community and for the world, let us all pray to Christ the Lord, not only for ourselves and our own needs, but for all of God s people. For the whole church on this day of Pentecost, as the glorified Christ lets fall His promised Holy Spirit, that the strong wind of His coming may surge through the Upper Room where we have waited, to kindle in each of us His holy fire, let us pray to the Lord. For the lay faithful, commissioned by the Spirit to be a ferment in society for the kingdom of God, that the Spirit s gifts of fortitude and joy may make them strong friends of Christ, able to stand up for the demands of justice, life, and peace, let us pray to the Lord. That the Spirit may be an anointing of comfort to the sorrowful, healing to the sick, calm to the anxious, forgiveness to sinners, and refreshment to us all on our pilgrim way, let us pray to the Lord. That each of us who follow Jesus may, like Him, make it our delight and joy to do God s will that inspired by the Holy Spirit we will bring Christ s love, mercy, forgiveness, and the joy of the gospel to all those we meet, let us pray to the Lord.
For our faithful departed ones, that the Lord may send forth His Spirit into their souls, so that they may be placed in eternal life as His new creation, let us pray to the Lord. The Priest s Prayer for the Universal Prayers will be the Joyful Discipleship Commissioning Prayer which follows. O Mary, Mother of Jesus and Mother of the Church, we are mindful of the role you play in the evangelization of souls. We are mindful of how missionaries were sent forth to bring the power and joy of Christ s gospel to all those they met. As the Mother of Divine Grace, you were with the missionaries in all their efforts. And, as Mother of the Church, you presided over all the activities of evangelization and over the imparting of the Gospel in the hearts of the faithful. We ask you Mary, Star of the New Evangelization, to help us fulfill the mission of evangelization which your Son has given to the Church and which falls to us. Mindful of your role as Help of Christians, we entrust ourselves to you in the work of carrying the joy of the Gospel ever deeper into the hearts and lives of all the people we encounter. We entrust to you our missionary mandate and ask that you intercede for us so that we, like you, will be able to say yes to all that God asks of us as joyful missionary disciples. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Mass continues as usual with the Presentation and Preparation of the Offerings.
